Description:
Poison Sumac (Toxicodendron vernix) in autumn color, E USA. The bright, beautiful red leaves are deceptive. Like its cousin, Poison Ivy, the rash-causing agent urushiol, is present everywhere in this native shrub. It is a lover of wetlands, growing in open areas of lake edges, bogs, fens, and other lowlands. Caution, this plant is very dangerous and toxic. Some experts consider this to be single most poison plant in Eastern North America.
