Description

By Cyclorana

Description:
Southern Elephant seals (Mirounga leonina) drop their pups around early October in South Georgia. After their very rapid growth and weaning after 3-4 weeks, the large pups are abandoned by their mothers, and remain on the beach until they are large enough to go to sea and fend for themselves. While on the beach, these 'weaners' often huddle in groups, and often enter shallow meltwater lagoons to play.
