Description:
The U.S. Department of State Syria Transition Assistance Response Team visit the Raqqah Main Water Station in southern Raqqah, Syria on May 12 2018. The three year ISIS occupation and the subsequent battle to remove militants from the city caused extensive damage to the water supply infrastructure, leading to leaking pipelines and disabled pumping stations, the station’s control room and pumps were completely destroyed and up until eight months ago the water station was inoperable. 37 out the 40 original pumps are now working and providing water to 180,000 people in and around Raqqah city. Water is collected, treated and pumped underground in pipes across the river, providing approximately 70 percent of Raqqah city with access to water. The Raqqah Civil Council works with the Coalition to restore critical infrastructure throughout the city and surrounding areas as the community returns to normality.
