Egypt: Democracy Activist Israa Abdul-Fattah Says Arab Spring Deserves Nob...

CAIRO, EGYPT (OCTOBER 6, 2011) (REUTERS) STREET IN CAIRO EGYPTIAN DEMOCRACY ACTIVIST, ISRAA ABDUL-FATTAH, WALKING DOWN STAIRS IN OFFICES OF EGYPTIAN DEMOCRATIC ACADEMY (SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) DEMOCRACY ACTIVIST AND MEDIA DIRECTOR OF THE EGYPTIAN DEMOCRATIC ACADEMY, ISRAA ABDUL-FATTAH, SAYING: "I think that the Arab Spring deserves to be a candidate and after all we are now just at the nominating stage. The Arab Spring contributed very greatly to deepening the definition of peaceful change. To making it clear that we can fight with words, that we can fight with technology, that we can fight by being present and demonstrating peacefully in city squares. I believe that the Arab Spring contributed to deepening the definition of change towards democracy and freedom by using all noble peaceful means." SIGN FOR EGYPTIAN DEMOCRATIC ACADEMY (SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) DEMOCRACY ACTIVIST AND MEDIA DIRECTOR OF THE EGYPTIAN DEMOCRATIC ACADEMY, ABDUL-FATTAH, SAYING: "During the Egyptian revolution I was no different than many of the other young people or other individuals. Perhaps I played a role and paid a price, but so did many others. We may agree or differ on the size of the role, but everyone played their part. Perhaps myself, as an Egyptian girl, who wears a headscarf, who is Muslim - if you bring that all together it looks very strange to international society and perhaps that is what made the name 'Israa' somewhat well known. At the same time, the idea for the 6th of April strike - it was the first time that new media was used. The first time that the name 'Facebook' was used in a struggle and to bring about peaceful change. That was on the sixth of April, 2008. So that had some influence on the initiative, on the initiative that we used to bring about the change between 2008 to 2011." It would send a message to the dictators still present - for example al-Assad and others who are still present -- that the Arab struggle, the struggle your people are undertaking, is being honoured by the Nobel committee. This could also encourage the sympathy of the international community and allow us to exert more pressure to stop what al-Assad is doing to his people, and to stop what Saleh is doing to his people and to stop what others are doing to their people. I think, more than helping those countries who have already brought down their dictators, this will help those who are still trying to bring down their regimes."
