Description:
(SOUNDBITE) (English) JAMES ALIX MICHEL, PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF SEYCHELLES, SAYING: "I think the small countries, especially small island states, are suffering the most through climate change, especially with droughts, with sea level rises and global warming. I think any help, any resources that can be put at the disposal of the small islands can help them to continue developing sustainable energy, depend less on fossil fuels and thus pollute less the environment." VARIOUS OF PAL TECHNOLOGIES LED LIGHTING STAND (SOUNDBITE) (English) SYED BASAR SHUEB, GENERAL MANAGER, PAL GROUP, SAYING: "We know that most of the developers, those who come to us, ask always that they need a sustainable solution in building management systems for their real estate development and which we have seen that for a period of time, that the demand is increasing. Even a small developer today, they use it as a marketing tool initially but they have realised the importance of those things." EXHIBITION HALL/ KYOTO ENERGY STAND "KYOTO" LOGO/ POSTER (SOUNDBITE) (English) JOHN BOHMER, FOUNDER AND CEO, KYOTO ENERGY, SAYING: "What we're doing is we're looking at the bottom of the pyramid and working our way up, rather than the other way around. That means looking at the energy needs of rural African families and figuring out what do they need. So 90 percent of energy needs in the rural areas are cooking, and that has led to massive deforestation in just about every African country. So what we need to do is firstly solve the cooking problem, which also fortunately gives us a lot of CO2 credits that helps finance those tools. So if you do that very cheaply and simply, then you can move onto the next one which is lighting and cleaning water. Once you have that then you're basically able to live a more healthy lifestyle without having to destroy the environment you live in. That's very important because populations are growing very fast, and the forests are dwindling and that mismatch is going to be disastrous sooner or later. So we're going to have to speed up to find solutions. What we do in Kyoto Energy is we don't build factories, we use the factories which exist already. So we take off the shelf materials like aluminium, plastic, even cardboard and turn them into solar energy products. Rather than relying on all those specialised hi-tech manufacturing processes where people are building solar energy factories costing billions of dollars, taking years and years to produce. We don't rely on that. We look at what's already there and we turn it around and we use those tools."
