Description:
BERLIN, GERMANY (APRIL 21, 2010) (REUTERS) EXTERIOR OF DEFENCE MINISTRY VARIOUS OF GERMAN MEDALS OF HONOUR GUTTENBERG AND MCCHRYSTAL ARRIVING FOR NEWS CONFERENCE PHOTOGRAPHERS (SOUNDBITE) (German) GERMAN DEFENCE MINISTER, KARL-THEODOR ZU GUTTENBERG, SAYING: "When the Afghan army and government is in a position to take over security and the responsibility for security themselves, then we can reach our goal by handing over responsibly to be able to discuss withdrawal perspectives. And this is our goal, that we want to move forward with together." VARIOUS OF MEDIA (SOUNDBITE) (German) GERMAN DEFENCE MINISTER, KARL-THEODOR ZU GUTTENBERG, SAYING: "The example that i just named: That we were rescued by U.S. Medevac helicopters shows that we were able to resort to resources that we ourselves don't have. What will also be important is that there are military helicopters available in the North and in the next weeks and months - and we want this to happen as quickly as possible - but this is a decision process that the U.S. will also be undertaking. To be able to join the capacities of our different forces. This is a very important aspect as long as we are not in a position to provide all the resources ourselves. This will only increase the support for our soldiers and increase their safety in the north." CLOSE OF MEDALS (SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. NATO COMMANDER GENERAL AND ISAF COMMANDER GENERAL STANLEY MCCHRYSTAL, SAYING: "The situation in Afghanistan remains serious and 2010 will be a critical year. Military operations will be necessary to set the security conditions for success. But it will be the establishment of Afghan led governance and development that twill determine the country's future. The role being played by German forces in the North and at Headquarters continues with distinction and i applaud their service and their sacrifice." PHOTOGRAPHERS WIDE OF NEWS CONFERENCE (SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. NATO COMMANDER GENERAL AND ISAF COMMANDER GENERAL STANLEY MCCHRYSTAL, SAYING: "I don't think i have ever been quoted as saying that we would kill all the Taliban. I think I said that what we would do is that we would provide security for the Afghan people against coercion and insurgence and allow them to develop a durable governance. I think that President Karzai is taking appropriate steps for a political leader to try to bring in all the parts of his population. I certainly wouldn't judge each individual action but I think that letting every Afghan have the opportunity to participate in the political process under the rules of the constitution is something that he is committed to."
