BERLIN, GERMANY (MAY 8, 2017) (REUTERS) GERMAN CHANCELLOR ANGELA MERKEL ARRIVING FOR NEWS CONFERENCE AT CDU PARTY EVENT (SOUNDBITE) (German) GERMAN CHANCELLOR, ANGELA MERKEL, SAYING: "I was delighted about the fantastic electoral success of Emmanuel Macron and I congratulated him personally yesterday by telephone. Emmanuel Macron carries the hopes of millions of French people and of many people in Germany and the whole of Europe. He conducted a brave, pro-European campaign. He stands for openness to the world. He stands firmly behind a social market economy and we know that Germany and France are bound by fate." (SOUNDBITE) (German) GERMAN CHANCELLOR, ANGELA MERKEL, SAYING: "Today the Franco-German friendship is a cornerstone of German politics. Germany and France today stand before mutual challenges, the mutual challenges of leading our countries and the European Union to a safe and successful future. We agree on many of the steps needed and wherever possible Germany and France will take these steps together for the sake of both our countries and for the strength of Europe and that is exactly the spirit that i hope for and which I think will be the case in working together with the newly elected president, Emmanuel Macron. I wish him and thereby the people of France all possible success." (SOUNDBITE) (German) GERMAN CHANCELLOR, ANGELA MERKEL, SAYING: "I think that we should first wait to see what wishes and concepts the new president puts forward. I have no doubt at all that we will work well together. But I think that we should wait until he is in office, until he has expressed his wishes and then we will see where we find mutualities. I have done this with each French president. And in light of the situation we have in Germany I don't see that we need to change our policies rather I would like to help France lower its unemployment rate and to increase the chances of young people to find jobs. How we do this, we will talk about together. As far as I am concerned I would just like to point out that the future president Emmanuel Macron has not expressed any criticisms on the stability and growth pact rather has made clear that France has a number of tasks and there are other themes like the strengthening of the euro zone where we have many ideas that have already been developed. I look forward to our working together but would like to wait for a direct conversation with the president and to hear his wishes from him."
