NUREMBERG, GERMANY (MARCH 22, 2017) (REUTERS) VARIOUS EXTERIORS OF GERMAN RESEARCH INSTITUTE GFK GFK RESEARCHER ROLF BUERKL WALKING PAST (SOUNDBITE) (German) GFK RESEARCHER, ROLF BUERKL, SAYING: "Consumer sentiment in March is inconsistent. There is no clear trend. On the other hand, we have rising expectations for the economy. The purchasing tendency also increased. However, on the other hand income expectations suffer losses. Taking into account the savings tendency which also rose a little, consumer sentiment dropped between March and April from 10.0 to 9.8 points." VARIOUS OF GFK CHARTS ON DISPLAY (SOUNDBITE) (German) GFK RESEARCHER, ROLF BUERKL, SAYING: "Income expectations are very much affected by inflation. We saw an inflation rate of 2.2 percent for Germany in February which is a relatively high figure. This impairs the purchasing power and consumers act accordingly. Income expectations therefore are a little more moderate. Worse still is the fact that there is still no interest, there is a zero percent interest rate policy in Germany. So in light of an inflation rate of more than two percent this is especially bad news for savers." Especially for Germany as an export nation this is not a good sign if protectionist tendencies in the United States strengthen." MONITOR ON WALL PHOTO BUERKL'S HANDS (SOUNDBITE) (German) GFK RESEARCHER, ROLF BUERKL, SAYING: "The political situation which remains unclear in several countries adds to this. There will be elections in France and in the autumn in Germany. As far as France goes, if right-wing populist tendencies succeed with the possibility to maybe leave the EU, this too would have long-term consequences for Germany if the common domestic market is endangered."
