SANTIAGO, CHILE (APRIL 10, 2019) (REUTERS) NEWS CONFERENCE WITH SCIENTISTS ANNOUNCING FIRST IMAGE OF A BLACK HOLE IMAGE OF BLACK HOLE ON SCREENS JOURNALISTS AT EVENT (SOUNDBITE) (English) MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY RESEARCH SCIENTIST, DR. GEOFFREY B. CREW, SAYING: "And, finally what we get from these numbers, through this Schwarzschild radius, is the mass of the black hole. And, the number turned out to be 6.5 billion solar masses. That is to say 6.5 billion times as massive as our sun. The Schwarzschild radius, the event horizon for that, is four times the orbit of Neptune, and that whole image that you see is as big as our heliosphere, that's the entire part of our local piece of space where the comets, the Oort Cloud, all that stuff lives. And, that's how big that thing is. But, it's going at the speed of light, so the circuit around, instead of taking hundreds of years or even thousands of years, is a few days. Again, put that in your head and think about it for a second." JOURNALISTS AT COMPUTERS SCIENTISTS AT NEWS CONFERENCE (SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) ASSISTANT SCIENTIST AT THE JOINT ALMA OBSERVATORY, DR. VIOLETTE IMPELLIZZERI, SAYING: "Thanks to this privileged position (of the observatory in Chile), we can combine the signal that comes from all the other telescopes, and thanks to the central position and its sensitivity, during the correlation the common signal can be identified that all the telescopes have together, what we call boxes, and synchronize that signal in a way that the final telescope image, resolution corresponds to a telescope that is as big as the whole earth, and that is incredible, above all in this frequency." SCIENTISTS AT NEWS CONFERENCE (SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) DIRECTOR GENERAL OF THE EUROPEAN SOUTHERN OBSERVATORY, XAVIER BARCONS, SAYING: "An astronomer like me who has dedicated practically my whole career to the search for giant black holes in the center of the galaxies using other types of techniques, and to be capable of arriving at today to really see a black hole, in fact one of the biggest that we know of in the universe, and to see such a clear and sharp image of the shadow of the black hole - it's really a very, very emotional day for me, and I hope for many of my colleagues."
