Civil Rights leader BAYARD RUSTIN did his best to disperse rioting crowds in Harlem, and he urged them to go home. But they didn't. Instead, some of them called for black nationalist leader Malcolm X. Then police moved in. More than a hundred persons were injured in the weekend
rioting. For 2 successive nights hundreds of negroes threw bricks, bottles, even Molotov cocktails at New York City Police who tried to disperse roving gangs & stop looting. More than a hundred persons were injured, including 2 doz. policemen. A negro hurling bricks from a rooftop was killed by police bullets Saturday night. Sunday's violence started near this Harlem Funeral Home where services were held for a 15 year old negro, James Powell, who was killed by police last week.
