Description:
WATFORD, ENGLAND, UNITED KINGDOM (DECEMBER 4, 2019) (REUTERS) GERMAN CHANCELLOR ANGELA MERKEL ARRIVING FOR NEWS CONFERENCE AT NATO SUMMIT SIGN READING (English): WE ARE NATO (SOUNDBITE) (German) GERMAN CHANCELLOR ANGELA MERKEL, SAYING: "We face challenges, it is good that China was mentioned in the Communiqué and of course Russia poses a challenge for us. On the one hand, Russia is known for its retaliation measures against us, for example hybrid warfare, but on the other hand, they are our neighbours." MERKEL DURING NEWS CONFERENCE (SOUNDBITE) (German) GERMAN CHANCELLOR ANGELA MERKEL, SAYING: "Well, I am meeting the Russian president next week and I will let you know if and how our conversation went. In the first instance we took these measures, which you know about from out press release, because we did not see that Russia was supporting us in clearing this murder. We are also of course in bilateral contact with our allies." JOURNALISTS (SOUNDBITE) (German) GERMAN CHANCELLOR ANGELA MERKEL, SAYING: "I don't think that our Normandy summit is burdened by this, it's about Ukraine and the question of progressing in the Minsk process. But for the bilateral relations this is an incident where we didn't receive any support from Russia in order to clear this case." MERKEL SPEAKING (SOUNDBITE) (German) GERMAN CHANCELLOR ANGELA MERKEL, SAYING: "I have made clear - as I just said (during news conference with Trump) - that the new EU Commission might leverage trade talks between the European Union and the United Sates of America. I think this would be a good signal." MERKEL DURING NEWS CONFERENCE (SOUNDBITE) (German) GERMAN CHANCELLOR ANGELA MERKEL, SAYING: "Surely he pointed at our responsibility quite clearly, so we had the opportunity this time to talk about other strategically important questions. And I got the impression that the mutual understanding also of our different geographical situations is growing, but this doesn't mean we agree on every issue." NATO SIGN NEWS CONFERENCE ENDING
