Description:
WATFORD, ENGLAND, UNITED KINGDOM (DECEMBER 4, 2019) (REUTERS) CANADIAN PRIME MINISTER JUSTIN TRUDEAU WALKING UP TO PODIUM (SOUNDBITE) (English) CANADIAN PRIME MINISTER JUSTIN TRUDEAU, SAYING: "The relationship we have with the United States is an extraordinarily important and effective one. We have renegotiated NAFTA to be a better deal for Canadians, for Americans and for Mexicans. We're moving forward on military collaboration. We're working together on the world stage on a broad range of things. And the relationship between Canada and the United States is extremely strong. And I have a very good relationship with President Trump and his team." WHITE FLASH (SOUNDBITE) (English) CANADIAN PRIME MINISTER JUSTIN TRUDEAU, SAYING: "Last night, I made a reference to the fact that there was an unscheduled press conference before my meeting with President Trump, and I was happy to take part of it. But it was certainly notable. And I've had a number of good conversations with the president over the course of this, this, this day and yesterday." WHITE FLASH (SOUNDBITE) (English) CANADIAN PRIME MINISTER JUSTIN TRUDEAU, SAYING: "We were all surprised and I think pleased to learn that the next G7 will be at Camp David. I think that was an unscheduled announcement. And I think everyone's team, every different leader, has teams who every now and then have their jaws drop at unscheduled surprises like that video itself, for example." WHITE FLASH (SOUNDBITE) (English) CANADIAN PRIME MINISTER JUSTIN TRUDEAU, SAYING: "I think we recognise that there are, as we talked to G7 leaders and interest in where the next G7 meeting is going to be. And I was pleased to share with them the story of how that came about that we are going to be gathering apparently in Camp David in in the in the coming year for the G7 meeting." WHITE FLASH (SOUNDBITE) (English) CANADIAN PRIME MINISTER JUSTIN TRUDEAU, SAYING: "Well, I think we, we saw from last year at NATO that this is a concern the United States legitimately has that every country needs to step up in different ways and make sure that we are contributing fully to NATO, as we have shown over the past year. Not only are we increasing our defence spending by 70 percent over these, this decade to ensure that we are able to provide to the men and women of the armed forces the tools they need to engage in the world the way we and our allies expect us to. We've continued to step up in leadership roles, whether it's being the first leaders for the first two years of the NATO training mission in Iraq, whether it's leading the Enhance Forward Presence Battle Group in Latvia, whether it's engaged in a broad range of, of NATO operations and, and initiatives in Europe and around the world. Canada has a history of stepping up around NATO and we will continue to. And the reflection on the increased investments we're making was really important. And I was glad to have that conversation with the president."
