Most children had been working at the landfill, that's the truth. Now they (children) have a place to be where they can learn, but most are children of parents who work at the landfill and didn't have the means. Some (children) had old mobile phones but they didn't have internet access. They didn't have anything or the means to study.'' FLAT SCREEN AND CHILDREN AT SCHOOL VOLUNTEER TEACHER WITH SMALL CHILDREN AT SCHOOL WHITE SHEETS OF PAPER WITH EL CHAPO'S INITIALS GENERAL VIEW OF SCHOOL (SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) ESMERALDA QUINONEZ, A COMMUNITY LEADER IN THE BICENTENNIAL EXTENSION SETTLEMENT, SAYING: ''Thank God, the children of El Chapo heard about the situation here and showed solidarity and helped us to build this school. They wanted to build something larger but we were unable due to time constraints. We asked them to build here and for them to help us to adapt it and that's what happened. They helped us to adapt the area, they provided fabric. They built a room to hold all the material, they gave us laptops, internet connection, two internet modems and they gave us the uniforms, shoes for the children.'' Wherever the money comes from, it's productive. I think it's productive. They spend money on things like this, but also on other things that don't make sense. They spend without thinking and we have to recognise (this effort). I am against a lot of things. My ideals, integrity and priorities are something else but if it's about education, I think it's a good investment.'' GENERAL OF SCHOOL BOY STUDYING AT SCHOOL GIRLS SHOES EL CHAPO'S INITIALS / STUDENTS IN BACKGROUND (SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) ESMERALDA QUINONEZ, A COMMUNITY LEADER IN THE BICENTENNIAL EXTENSION SETTLEMENT, SAYING: ''COVID-19 does not reach this area. We are not talking about children who are out and about in the city, or shopping. Most (families) buy in (local) shops and live from the landfill. There are people who depend on the landfill to eat. These are not children who live far away. What we do ask is that people from outside wear a face mask. I use it because I go out to government offices and I go to the city but the children don't go to the city. We are isolated in the Bicentennial Extension settlement. We are isolated here.''
