The old town is the oldest part of Fredrikstad town. It was founded on 12 September 1567 on the east side of Glomma , where the river divides into two courses.
King Frederik II signed the city foundation letter, and Fredrikstad became the first Norwegian city to be founded after the Middle Ages and the first that the king allowed to be named after the king himself.
