Chopin - Ballade No. 4 Op. 52

Form: Ballade
Instrument: Piano
Period: Romantic
Performer: Vadim Chaimovich
Title: Chopin's Ballade no. 4 in Fm, Op. 52 was composed in 1842 in Paris and dedicated to Baroness Rothschild, who had invited Chopin to play in her Parisian residence and introduced him to the aristocracy. According to Schumann, this Ballade was inspired by Mickiewicz's poem The Three Budrys. A distinguishing feature of this Ballade is its contrapuntal nature, setting it aside from the others. Of the four, it is considered by many pianists to be the most difficult, technically and musically. According to John Ogdon, " the most exalted, intense and sublimely powerful of all Chopin's compositions ... It is unbelievable that it lasts only twelve minutes, for it contains the experience of a lifetime."
