Florida Folksong - Nina

Cuban Americans vocals with piano Ethnography Music Cuban songs Serenades Cuban Club Tampa, Florida Hillsborough County

Sung in Spanish and described in English: "This is probably the oldest type of Cuban song that has ever--that has been known to be the oldest. There is no way of tracing it to its author or originality; it has just been picked from one generation to another." As later translated by Art Pages, "This is a typical song that is sung to a girl by a window--Spanish windows. . . .He just sang to her and telling her how much he loves her, and in other words just calling her to the window in order to start a conversation or something, just a song to start a conversation." Ybor City, now a neighborhood within Tampa, was settled in 1886 by Cuban cigar manufacturers under the leadership of Vicente Martメnez de Ybor. The cigar companies moved from Key West to avoid unionization of their workers. The Cuban Club is a recreational society founded in 1899 by Cuban immigrants.
