Florida Folksong - Guabina [Translation]

Cuban Americans spoken Ethnography Music Narratives Announcements Cuban Club Tampa, Florida Hillsborough County

The song that you have just heard Carlos Pous sing, it's sort of a Negro song. It's a Negro telling his girl not to mix with another tribe because he does not consider them as good as they are and he does not want to mix the tribes. Well, it seems like the girl is in love with someone, and she goes to a nearby tribe, and he does not want her to continue to go over there, and he's asking her to please stay in their grounds. Ybor City, now a neighborhood within Tampa, was settled in 1886 by Cuban cigar manufacturers under the leadership of Vicente Martメnez de Ybor. The cigar companies moved from Key West to avoid unionization of their workers. The Cuban Club is a recreational society founded in 1899 by Cuban immigrants.
