Florida Folksong - Punto Guajiro

Cuban Americans vocals with piano and drum Ethnography Music Cuban songs Serenades Love songs Cuban Club Tampa, Florida Hillsborough County

A typical Cuban peasant melody, introduced in English by Art Pages, and performed in Spanish. As later translated by Art Pages, "The Cuban peasants use songs to call on the loved ones, especially at night or in the morning, and the song that Estela Echezabal just sang is one of them. Roughly, it is morning, and he is singing to his loved one, and though he claims that the sun is just out and he can see everything clearly, it seems like there is nothing around until he sees her." Ybor City, now a neighborhood within Tampa, was settled in 1886 by Cuban cigar manufacturers under the leadership of Vicente Martメnez de Ybor. The cigar companies moved from Key West to avoid unionization of their workers. The Cuban Club is a recreational society founded in 1899 by Cuban immigrants.
