RED Scarlet

Due in 09, for about $3000,

Red's pocket-sized professional camera, Scarlet has made its promised debut at NAB, and it is the tiny hotness. It shoots in heady 3k resolution with Red's new 2/3-inch Mysterium X sensor, shooting from 1-120fps (180fps burst) and up to 100MB/sec REDCODE RAW HD, recording to dual Compact Flash cards. It's got Wi-Fi control (sweet), and all the necessary ports: HDMI, HD-SDI, Firewire 800 and USB2. The 4.8-inch LCD should be more than adequate on this compact HD shooter. Besides coming with an 8X T2.8 Red zoom lens, it's compatible with most Red One accessories. Price? We're hearing under $3000, set for early '09, no pre-orders. But the note that specs and delivery dates could change is a bit ominous, since the Red One saw some delays.

I just wanted to chime in on the platform necessary to edit these large file sizes. I create Maya stock footage at data rates of 100MB/sec and a system like the one below will work fine. The system below can handle data rates up to 200MB/sec without a problem.

AMD Quad Core 9750 <-- $199.00

BioStar TA780G M2+ Motherboard - This motherboard can handle up to 16 GB of 1033 DDR2 RAM when it becomes affordable. Another nice thing about this motherboard is that it has 6 internal Sata 2 connectors and supports RAID 0, 1, and 10. <-- $89.99

8 GB DDR2 6400 Ram <-- $ 169.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231151

Windows XP 64 Bit <-- I have tried windows Vista Ultimate 64 Bit and really liked it with one exception. It takes 2GB of my 8GB of memory to start up. Even without running the Aero interface it still took 1.7GB of memory just to start. Windows XP 64 Bit runs with 756MB of RAM. And XP runs slightly faster on top of everything else.

Radeon 4850 <-- $199.00

Dual 22" Acer LCD Monitors <-- These are on sale at NewEgg for $199 each free shipping

And then all the storage you can afford. Sata2 1TB Hard Drives on sale for $125.00 Each - http://www.memorylabs.net/wediwd31tbsa.html

So overall you can build relatively affordable system that can handle 1080P footage and much more without breaking the bank.

I stand corrected on the price of the Red Scarlet . According to Camcorderifno.com the only Scarlet at this years NAB was a mockup in a glass case. As they had done with the Red One at 2006 NAB. There is also very little info on accessories or performance. So all we have heard is hip from Jim Jannard.

My computer works fine, I can render two things at once and play a game at the same time. The thing is this camera man guy said you needed many fast computers to make a 60 minute movie ( using the original red one) otherwise it would take you several years to finish the movie....I don't know if thats true, sometimes he exagerates.

Personally when I edit and shoot a video, I am very efficient though... I story board every detail, I plan out everything, and I do most of it in one take. I made an educational video once, and I recorded everything I needed in about three days. Of course planning and editing took me a really long time (because at the time my I was using a 12inch slow laptop.)

I know people who have been shooting with RED one and have been editing on a standard Macbook Pro, a little clunky but it works.

I desperately need a Red One or two!!! Give me a Red or at least a Scarlet, I beg you all!!! I am a poor, orphan, helpless, powerless, innocent, little, young, sweet submitter!!!

Kind regards to you all!

Seems the new Canon has made Red redesign the Scarlet.
A lot of speculation on the price, interchangable lenses, etc...
But now it seems the release date may be next November.
The are also releasing a video capable DSLR to compete with the Nikon and Canon cameras.

The Scarlet is starting to sound like vaporware.

or a Flux Capacitor

Aw crud monkeys ... looks like I might get a video capable dslr instead and use it exclusively as a video camera. looks like the canon starts at $2,600 without the lense... not too bad, (scarlet was $3,000) Ive got the lense from a canon rebel, I think it might work on the Canon EOS 5D? It looks like red is also delaying the "epic 5k" camera too.

Thanks for this update Jake!
