Anyone use a canon 600D ?

Marbury, will you please just buy a camera. Any camera.
ODesigns 12 Mar 2014 13:13
Both are fine. In my opinion, the GH3 shoots better video, but the T3i/600D shoots better stills. Whatever you feel is more important.

With the GH4 coming out next month, the GH3 may drop in price.

+1 ;-)

It's always tough making that final decision isn't it?

I think we should have a vote!

If it weren't for the problem of moire - I'd vote for the Canon - but as moire and aliasing are my biggest bug-bears on my 7D (and has ruined plenty of clips) I'm voting for the Panasonic; unless you cough up for the Canon 5DIII which produces beautiful files.

I would love the Canon 5D II as it is full frame and amazingly good image and video quality BUT it is £1000 + before you even think about a decent lens :-(

Which is why I'm voting for the GH3.

As ODesigns has said - this camera may well drop further shortly due to the imminent arrival of the GH4. Panasonic tend to have quite high price drops as newer cameras are developed.

PS: I wasn't talking about the 5DII - but the III (£2,300) in UK.

PPS how close are we to deciding?
1 = nowhere near, lots of posts to come
10 ordering tomorrow morning - full clip production by Friday

Probably 5 on the scale. I am just very cautious about buying as I want to get it right. I want to have a camera that does the two jobs excellent. When I go out on location I don't want to have to be carting my D200 around as well for stills but if the GH3 is better for stills than the D200 I won't notice any loss in quality. Besides, I do a lot of post production in Lightroom (excellent software) from my Raw files so the GH3 shouldn't be a problem. BUT if I get that the 24-105 mm lens for the 600D the results would be as good in video or near enough to the GH3.

Sorry folks, I am appreciating the advice so thanks.

If there is a chance that for video you would have less aliasing/moire' issues on the GH3, I'd go with that. Really - it's like one of the worst things that ever happened to me - learning about aliasing! Ruined so many shots! With stills, it's a bit easier to fix - with video, possible in some cases, but not worth it, usually, just so sad.

I'd lean toward video quality, since your point was to make more money with video, rather than stills, since you are less likely to see gains from that as soon, or as much.

There's also not that much wrong with having two cameras with you on location - especially smaller cameras, since inevitably you'll have one on sticks shooting 2-headed ducks on a pond being eaten by a radioactive anaconda, when a UFO flies off with your best friend's sandwich, and getting that footage or at least a couple stills of it might be kinda cool too...

Have you even thought about the computer? Your machine might be fine for stills and sound files ... has it met a 50mpbs .mov file from a Canon camera yet? (I have no experience from the Panny so I don't know what it's files are like)

Not sure what you mean about my computer ? It was built last year for me for music production. I can watch HD stuff on Youtube no problem.

Another thing to consider, and believe me, I'm at least as nit picky and wishy washy when it comes to gear decisions as anyone I know, and I ALWAYS screw it up - in other words ... there is no perfection. It literally almost comes down to a coin toss. Ultimately the camera is an instrument through which the photographer expresses his or her vision. The way said photographer deals with the limitations of the gear is the determining factor is whether the work is garbage or art.

Watching youtube HD is totally different from editing raw camera files into usable clips. It will likely be fine. Really - I started on a much lesser machine than what I have now, and yours is certainly better than that old thing. But don't be surprised if it irks you at how hard the poor thing has to work. I spent what I thought was a lot on mine, and got the best I could afford, and it's pretty decent, but it's nowhere near what it needs to be. Just sayin'....it's never enough, and it never ends!
