You can on the top one, but I don't think on the grip. I don't think I'd want to on the grip anyhow. That's a big selling point for me: smooth variable zooming.
Just like the good ol' days.

@ODesigns - Are you using a remote to zoom?

No, just years of practice (and many attempts to get it right).
I'd like to get a remote. There's a port for a remote on the handle but I don't know what remote is compatible.
Remember, I'm old school. I learned to shoot video http://www.scubatech.com/637.htm back in the day. So I'm comfortable with this camera's form factor.

@whstock the amount of pressure you apply to the switch will determine how fast you zoom in or out. That camera should have
i-link over the on/off switch for a remote switch attached to your video head handle.

James if it's a sony remote on the handle with stereo type connector it's compatible.

It looks like the port is an 1/8" jack. Didn't the Sony remotes have proprietary ports? At least that's what I recall.
I don't even know if the remote port on the AX1 is for zooming. For all I know it's for remotely starting and stopping the recording. I'll check the manual.

There's a small rubber plug just above the hand grip which should be the i-link for the remote

I bet http://www.amazon.com/Sony-RMVD1-DCR-DVD-DCRVX2100-Camcorders/dp/B00008ZGSO/ref=pd_sim_p_7 would be compatible, but I doubt it's variable/pressure controlled like the rocker zoom controls on the grip. If it's not, it's worthless to me.

Sony has alway had variable zoom rocker switch on their video cameras. I'm looking at the manual right now and there is a VF Setting to turn on both viewfinder and LCD at the same time. There is also a remote connector just where I said it would be above the hand grip.
Guess you to were to busy shooting with your new toy to bother reading the manual. LOL

I'm at work and the camera isn't in front of me, so I was going by memory. I knew there was a remote connector, I just didn't know what remote would work with it.
I think http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/330007-REG/VariZoom_VZ_ROCK_VZRock_Variable_Rocker_for_LANC.html would do the trick for me.
