New Search Results Page Layout Concept

I have created a quick mockup of a potential new Search Results Page that could help to alleviate major concerns from established, solid producers, but also allow for new producers and fresh clips to get noticed as well.

I recommend that the left-most-column of the search results should showcase the best-sellers for that search, and the right-most column of clips should be the newest clips in that search criteria, with all the "normal" results in between.

Here is a link to a sample of how I envision it:

Any thoughts?

Nice work, but I don't understand the issue - as in what problems does this suggested revision solve? The search results currently reflect best sellers ranking and are presented to buyers by relevance of search and sales history - just without the special display. If it's not broke, why fix it?

Actually the Default Search algorithm has been in flow and flux since about August, and it has caused many long-time sellers to see a dramatic decrease in sales. The staff at P5 have shared in other threads that they are trying to find the perfect mix that honors the long time good sellers, but also includes new and fresh material to give it a chance. I feel that this approach could solve that problem.

I think good algorithm should simply favor good clips. New or old - it's really not relevant. Content is king. Newer content comes from better cameras, so the buyer can decide. The artist is not relevant. Many of us are anonymous yet sell very well.

I agree with Wideweb, there's no reason to favor anyone simple because of seniority. The only criteria should be sales - and perhaps the perceived ranking of the clips potential by the curators initially. There could be some ranking, which they have alluded to, by the artists sales potential as a whole and/or the artists sales in a particular topic. Bring on the PhD.

Maybe you missed what I shared earlier...the purpose of the 2 columns is to accomplish what the staff at P5 say that they have been STRUGGLING to achieve---(1) promoting past, long time, GOOD SELLERS, but still giving (2) new, fresh clips a fighting chance. The latest algorithms (according to p5) have been favoring newer clips a bit over older, good sellers--and many of the established producers here with large portfolios have seen some dramatic decreases in sales.

Im all for competition, but I am just trying to share a method to accomplish (1) good sales (2) encourage new producers (3) satisfy buyers. It seems to me that giving the potential buyer this stratified approach should be a step in that direction.

I never said that seniority alone was the reason for the approach, notice I said "long time GOOD SELLERS". Age does not equal relevance or desirability. I dont care if the best seller in a search is only 4 months old, then it should be at the top left. The default search engine algorithm does not necessarily put the best sellers near the top anymore.

I agree on the most popular column ( Best Sellers) at the side or at the bottom in a never ending slider. I have to think about "fresh clips". Artist that are selling well now, may just want to leave things as is.

After thinking a few hours, about your layout, I agree with you.

Thanks for the explanation - I do see what you mean now after thinking about it. I am not the brightest bulb on the Xmas tree. I do see a "problem" with files that have a sales history before the massive influx of new material. They are not always the best, but they do show up with priority in the page listings along with genuinely good . It must be difficult for good new material to float upwards in the buyers search - particularly with a very non-curated hands-off model like Pond5.. Perhaps your solution has lot of merit.

I think this model should please just about everyone, regardless of where they fall on the spectrum, and with this approach, the "algorithm" can be continually tweaked without huge impact such as happened last fall---as long as the columns on the right and on the left stay true to their purpose.
