Canon C300 for footage

Hi - I have the opportunity of getting a Canon C300 MkII and am trying to decide on a lens.

First - is the Canon C300 a good option for footage?

Most of my work is shooting stock videos in a recording studio / home as well as outside shooting oceans, waves, sailing type shots at the moment.

The lenses I have an option to have with the camera include: (And I can only really afford one of these to start!)

Canon EF 24-70 2.8

Carl Zeiss Makro Planar 100mm 2.0 ZE

Carl Zeiss Distagion 35mm

Carl Zeiss Planar 50mm 1.4 ZE. (what does the ZE mean here?)

Tamron SP 10- 24mm

Canon EF 75-300 4-5.6

I have been shooting stock footage for about 5 years on and off - and am very much looking for some advice as I do not have experience of lenses like these. Nor the C300. Ive shot with 7D, Sony A6000, GH4 etc.

Would something like the Canon 17-55 2.8 be a better all rounder do you think for what I do - and as a relative novice?

Of the lenses available in the pack - the Canon EF 24-70 2.8 was the one I was thinking of. Most of my work at the moment is on tripod so IS not so important but that might change.

The C300 is probably overkill for what I do but it's become available at a very good price and seems like a great opportunity.

I'm am quickly trying to learn all about the C300 before I pick it up - can anyone suggest things I need to check on it? I was going to do some test footage to see if I can see anything wrong plus a look at the hours it has. Although not sure how to do that.

I was looking at an XT3 originally but then the C300 became available and seems to have a reputation for a lovely image.

Thanks for any help.

I shoot with both the original C300 and the C200
I shoot mostly these days with the C200 in 4k RAW and render to Prores.
They are amazing cameras that shoot great footage, so to answer your question is yes the C300MKII is great for anything you shoot.
Is it overkill for stock? Probably.
The same with me shooting RAW in the C200 but its what I want to submit.
I shoot a lot of commercial jobs using these cameras so there is that as well.

As to lens, that depends on what you're shooting. I shoot mostly actor related shots in my studio so I use a 50mm 1.4 or a 85mm 1.8 as my main lenses.

I do use my 70-200 2.8 for the events I shoot. I don't like hanging a lens that long on the C200 lens mount so I use a rail system with a lens support.

Thanks very much for getting back to me really appreciate it.

Excuse my ignorance but is it possible to shoot in a format / picture style that's good to go straight out of the camera? I tend to edit in Final Cut and tweak things slightly grading wise. However I don't have experience of grading from say C-Log. Lots to learn but I think it sounds like a quality camera - a workhorse perhaps.

I would like to pick a few of those lenses but can only go to one at the moment so was thinking the 24-70mm might be a good one to cover a few things.

I'm unsure if it's coming with a card(s) if not I see they are quite pricey too!

Good to hear you think they shoot great footage.

I need to take it for a test - what would you do to test the sensor?
Thanks J

I never use C-log, that is way too much work for stock or most of anything else I shoot.
I use Production camera and wide DR in the camera color matrix if I'm shooting MP4
Shooting raw, I set the color to the same in Premiere Pro.

Probably doesn't come with memory cards.

Testing the sensor? You mean low light stuff. that would be the only thing to test for.
But both my C200 and C300 are great in low light. I have gone to over 5000 ISO with little to no noise.

Thanks for that have now been testing it in Wide DR.
What did you mean by Production Camera?

Certainly does produce a beautiful picture doesn't it.

Originally I was looking at a GH5 or X-T3 but then the C300 became available for about the same price for various reasons.
It has 48 hours on the clock.

I am going to try it in low light - as you say and as have read elsewhere they are very good in low light.

I have not got a card yet but have been recording HD to the SD card on the front which seems to work ok for now until I can get the main card.
