Interesting article on how "The Guiding Light" is using 18 Canon XH G1 cameras exclusively for taping the show.

Goes to show where this industry is going.

Well I guess those of us with XH-A1 made a pretty good choice. I really don't need the time sinc or interchangeable lenses of the G1. I wonder what mode they shoot in, I may have missed it in the article, 60i, 24f or 30f? Seems they like the low light capability and with more procucers going for the "motion / jerk" filming it is easier with a smaller camera.

In the article they said they are still shooting SD but can change to HD when the networks want it. That was one of the selling points of buying this camera.
Also they are shooting everything handheld to give the viewers a more personal look.

Here is a link to a behind the scenes look at them filming using the camera.

I don't see in the G1's specs that the lens is interchangable, is it?

Yup maybe the only real big difference is the time codes, looks like the same CCD, lense and controls as XH-A1. Cheap skates ;). But this does put a whole new dimension and standard for broadcast. I'm surprised they don't shoot in HD and then just broadcast in SD. Seems like this would get them ready for the HD changeover that will soon become a standard. Digital next year and HD will soon follow.

Don,

There are no interchangeable lens on the G1. Here's what it has: The G1 comes equipped with the same professional connections that make the XL-H1 so unique. Fitted with the "jackpack", the camera can output uncompressed video through its integrated HD-SDI connection, making it ideal for field broadcasting. This is combined with both a genlock and timecode out, making the G1 a perfect camera not only for the field, but the studio as well. Concert and event videography is a breeze!
