new camcorder ffrom canon

@skinnytrain - I have seen your clips. You like the outdoors, an action videographer, and need a roughed camera with fast focus, superb image stabilization and zoom rocker. Surely the XA10 will be more tough than the VG-10. Nevertheless my son is in the military and he had to go for a weatherproof Canon 7D. It seems that fine dust inside helicopters kills non-weatherproof cameras.

I like the http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/camcorders/vg10.shtml review of the VG-10 and the conclusion that a NEX-5 comes close to offering the same.

This new Canon just looks like a consumer camcorder on steroids. I was hoping for a full frame XH-A1

Thanks for the help everyone. I think I got it. This article really helped.

If the VG10 shot RAW stills then I probably wouldn't even hesitate. Maybe I will just hold out for 5D Mark III. Hopefully they come up with something better than 12 minutes of video though.

I hate AVCHD... staying away from that.

Currently I'm looking at the EX1r, but still a little worried Canon is going to do something nuts this year... is it worth waiting... probably.

Scott, Don't hate. We were all AVCHD when we were young.

Or something like that.

Hopefully, Canon will make something like a Canon XF100 with a big 18 megapixel chips and removable lens for less than $4k.
JHDT_Productions 7 Jan 2011 21:11
I surely hope for that.

Since I have the VG10, I can only give you real world review from a stock standpoint.
In good lighting, it's quality is outstanding. Low light like the guys test above at high gain, it sucks heavily with noise.

I do love using this camera for run and gun stuff. As he says the stabilizer in the Sony camera far out performs the Canon using my 24-105 L with IS
I find almost tripod stability when hand holding a shot and panning.

Since it has a regular view finder and eyecup even using a Canon FD manual lens I find I can still use it hand held as you have two places the camera is being steadied, on your face and hand that is holding the camera.
That is pretty cool.
