DSLR'S and moire/aliasing

What are the causes of moire/aliasing in all DSLR cameras and how to remedy those issues.

Let me make a non scientific visualization:

Imagine that your sensor has a resolution of 300 ppi.
Now, imagine that something in your image, a texture, has a resolution of 299-301 ppi, depending on the distance and the angle of viewing. You can figure out that some pixels will be visible, then disappearing and then visible again etc. This phenomena is called moiré - a look of a silk fabric.

Same with aliasing - there are no straight lines in digital cameras. All lines must reside only where pixels exist.

The most common solution is to blur the image, either in post or by installing a special filter on the camera before the image is shot.

The main cause of Moire is the 'line skipping', the way the video image is 'extracted' from sensor. Line skipping and the lack of a proper processing algorithm are the main causes. As both of those are hardware implemented the only way to eliminate/attenuate the Moire is to: either avoid such subjects as bricks, patterned textures etc. or to use a softer lens or to slightly defocus.

Just don't wear striped ties on tv ;) Same issue exists on all cameras to an extent. Even the old interlaced TV broadcast cameras. Everyone just likes to pick on dslr.

Come-on Jason, we know that was a hypothetical question and you just started it so you can tell us the truth ;) LOL.

No, no, no. Moire is because without it, DSLRs would be too good.

Moire is somewhat fixed in 5d mk3, no?

I think they added an anti aliasing filter on the mark iii, which make the image a little softer. you can buy one of these to retro fit a mark ii also

I never get moire with the Gh2. The only time I experienced anything like it was when I had a video of a stack of frieght canisters on a ship. The narrow lines of the canisters gave a moire-like look on the smallest image only, but as soon as it was expanded to full size, it looked fine.

I just ordered this sensor. I sure hope it fits in my old Rebel XT http://www.photographybay.com/2011/09/15/canon-puts-8-inch-image-sensor-in-telescope-records-video-at-60fps/

But here is a better option:

Very cool info about the C300
