Can a video be cropped in adobe after effects cs6 ?

If its not too much you could scale the video to fill in the black areas. But be careful of that and not go but a few percent.
Or if your original footage is 1080 you could create a new 720 comp in AE, bring in your footage and scale it down to fit.

Don't know of a crop tool. I just do what I talked about above.
You still have to keep the video to a standard broadcast size. ie: 1080, 720 etc.
Unless I'm not understanding what you want to do.

There's no "crop" like in Photoshop. You'll have to scale-up or down.

I'd recommend Jake's solution: put the footage in a 720 comp, scaling/rotating as needed.

Or, if you're not needing much repair in the 1080, you could add a motion tile effect with the edges mirrored to remove the little sliver of black on the boarders.

If it gets over 4 or 5% scale I'll do what you guys mentioned and make it a smaller comp size.
