Is Anyone Experiencing Sudden FTP Upload Speed Drops?

Cine4world 21 Nov 2024 14:04
Hello everyone,

I hope you're all doing well. I wanted to ask if anyone else is experiencing a similar issue with uploading files via FTP to Pond5.

Here’s what’s happening:

I’m using FileZilla with a stable internet connection, and the upload starts at excellent speeds.
However, midway through uploading larger files (e.g., 3GB), the speed suddenly drops to around 30 KB/s and stays there.
I’ve tried everything: resetting my router, upgrading to a new router, and ensuring my internet speed remains consistent.
Some files upload normally without any issues, while others consistently face this problem.

I’ve reached out to Pond5 Support, and they’ve been helpful, but the problem persists. I’m curious if anyone else has faced this issue and if there are any suggestions or solutions you might have found.

Thanks in advance for your insights!

Best regards,

I've tried using Filezilla in the past and had problems with it.

I switched to WinSCP for reliable FTP transfers.

Thank you for the suggestion! I’ll give WinSCP a try and see if it resolves the issue. Appreciate your input!

Thank you for your suggestion! I tried WinSCP, but unfortunately, the issue persists.

Do you think it’s possible that there might be an issue with Pond5’s server causing this problem?

Bandwidth is shared and servers may be loaded too heavily. Maybe try at different time of day.

Hi PCDMedia,

Thank you for your suggestion and for sharing your experience with WinSCP. Unfortunately, I tried using WinSCP, but the issue still persists.

As for the idea that the problem might be related to server load or bandwidth sharing on Pond5's end, I think that's a valid possibility, especially since the issue occurs consistently with larger files.

I’ve also tried uploading files at different times of the day, but I haven’t noticed any significant improvement. It might be something else related to the server settings or how large files are handled.

If you have any additional thoughts or suggestions, I’d greatly appreciate hearing them.

Thanks again for your input!

You mentioned "...midway through uploading larger files (e.g., 3GB),"

Your file size may be an issue - there may be some throttling being applied somewhere in the pipeline.
P5's footage limits according to them here:
https://contributor.pond5.com/getting-started/preparing-your-files-2/footage/

Its all I can think of.

File Size
HD clips or lower: up to 3GB
4K/5K/6K clips: up to 5GB
8K clips: up to 6GB
R3D (zip w/ .mov): up to 6GB
Vertical footage: up to 3GB

Hi PCDMedia,

Thank you for pointing that out and for sharing the link. However, the issue isn’t limited to large files. I’ve encountered the same problem even with videos smaller than 1GB.

For context, I’m uploading in 4K resolution, so the file size typically isn’t exceeding their limits. The issue seems unrelated to the file size restrictions mentioned in their guidelines.

Following your previous suggestion, I reached out to Pond5 support, and they confirmed that they are aware of the issue and working on a solution. However, they didn’t provide a specific timeline for resolving it.

I appreciate your insights and support! If you have any further suggestions, I’d be glad to hear them.

Best regards,
