The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of You Tube

First, I want to say thank you to Pond5 for their fantastic support--very friendly and professional. Second, thanks to all you audio and visual artists. Your products on Pond5 are superb and priced so generously. Last--I'm not too happy with the You Tube legal jargon that immediately put me on the defensive.

I posted a book trailer for a graphic novel, "Republic," by Lucas Cole (July 2014, Western Gate Books) and, except for the illustrations from my the book, every aspect of the completed trailer was comprised of a Pond5 clip.

If a You Tube uploader uses a clip that is registered or licensed outside of Pond5, he may immediately be advised of a copyright warning. I believe this is a routine You Tube method of decreasing the likely horrific amount of plagiarism, but the language once you file a dispute--as you (the You Tube video uploader) are required to do--is very threatening and will bother some folks, like me, who are a little sensitive about such things. You Tube, for example, was going to give the opposite party an entire month to respond. Waaaay too long.

Anyway, this is just my take--absolutely not Pond5's. Bottom line: your work is superb, I will continue to use it, and please respond swiftly as you can to concerns from You Tube uploaders who have legitimately licensed your work.

The clips used were:

Statue of Liberty at Sunset (video excerpt) - by RedBlue
Lives In Caves (music theme) - by STARTsound
Military, Firefight (sound effects) - by Stockshooter
Battle, Military (sound effects) - by SoundIdeasCom

I hope these artists and you feel that I put their work to the best use. Frankly, I enjoyed making this book trailer more than I did the actual book. You can view the book trailer here: http://youtu.be/s6ojaQKwzdc
