The Bank of England is the United Kingdom's independent central bank. It's located on Threadneedle Street, London EC2R 8AH. The Bank stores the UK's gold reserves - 400,000 bars worth more than £200bn - as well as those of other central banks. The Bank's main role is to manage the overall state of the economy. It sets the monetary policy in order to achieve the UK's government inflation target. The Bank also buys and sells government bonds. Amongst its tasks are the production of banknotes, oversee credit and debit card payments, regulate banks and building societies, monitor risks in the UK financial system and act to reduce them. The Bank of England began as a private bank that would act as a banker to the Government. The original Royal Charter of 1694, granted by King William and Queen Mary, states that the Bank was founded to ‘promote the public Good and Benefit of our People’.
