Frequently Asked Questions

Stock videos (a.k.a. stock footage) are short video clips filmed by videographers or other creatives and licensed for use in film and video productions such as feature films, TV shows, commercials, company websites, video games, social media posts, or blogs. Stock content benefits filmmakers by saving time and money in shooting new material. Learn more about what stock video is and how it started.
Stock footage is a “secret weapon” used by video creators everywhere, from producers of the top feature films in Hollywood to individual YouTube creators and everyone in between.
There are many reasons filmmakers use stock footage in their productions. Using stock is more cost-effective than sending a crew to shoot the needed material. And because our artists are professional filmmakers themselves, in many cases, you may find a stock video clip that is even better than one you can shoot yourself. Our site is easy to use, and the unlimited variety of our stock video library offers many possibilities to enhance your storytelling.
You can use Pond5 media in projects intended for any platform! Our customers have licensed Pond5 media for feature films and video productions on every major streaming platform, from YouTube to Netflix to Hulu. A growing number of people are also using Pond5 for video advertising and on social media channels like YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. Use Pond5 videos in virtually every other project you can think of that uses video, including corporate presentations, websites, and video games.

When working with stock video, one of the more critical distinctions you’ll need to make is whether your use of the video is for “commercial” or “editorial” purposes.
“Commercial use” content is generally available for advertising, promotional, merchandising, or other projects where the video content is used for your own (or your client’s or company’s) benefit.
“Editorial use” is content that is newsworthy or of general public interest and is typically used for non-advertising purposes such as documentaries, news articles, or textbooks. This content is generally not cleared for advertising, promotional, merchandising, or any other commercial uses.
As you browse through Pond5, you’ll see a notation next to each video indicating whether it is cleared for Commercial Usage or only for Editorial Usage.
While we offer the same licenses for commercial and editorial content, our representations and warranties for commercial content differ from those extended to editorial content. Please see our License Agreement for additional details or check out our Guide to Royalty-Free Licensing.
If you’d like to discuss using editorial content commercially, don’t hesitate to contact us at +1 (855) 410-6789 or
