Pretoria is the administrative capital of South Africa, while Cape Town is the legislative capital and Bloemfontein the judicial capital. The first urban settlement in the area was founded by Marthinus Wessel Pretorius (to whom we owe the name of "Pretoria") in 1855. From 1860 to 1902 it was the capital of the independent Boer state of Transvaal. The treaty that ended the Anglo-Boer War (the Treaty of Vereeniging of 1902) was signed in Pretoria. In 1910, at the birth of the South African Union, Pretoria was chosen as the administrative capital, maintaining the same role even after the establishment of the Republic of South Africa (1961).
