Port Elizabeth or Elizabeth City is one of the major port cities of South Africa located in the Eastern Cape Province, on the southern coast (Indian Ocean), equidistant (800 km) from both Cape Town to W and Durban to E. The bay overlooked by the city, Algoa Bay, also includes Uitenhage and Despatch, which find with Port Elizabeth a practically uninterrupted urban area. Port Elizabeth is an important industrial and cultural center. It houses several automobile factories and one of the country's leading universities, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. Since 1998 it has maintained collaborative relationships with the Swedish city of Gothenburg and is twinned with Jacksonville in Florida.
