Simon's Town, is a South African town and naval base, located on the east coast of the Cape Peninsula, in the Western Cape Province. Its port overlooks False Bay. The town owes its name to Simon van der Stel, one of the first governors of the Cape Colony. Historically, Simon's Town has always been a naval base: during the British occupation it was controlled by the Royal Navy, today it houses the South African Navy. The strategic importance of the place is linked to the very position of the Cape of Good Hope, which lies between the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian Ocean. However, it is not a natural harbor (the Cape Peninsula offers very few truly protected bays); a wave defense was built with thousands of stone blocks obtained from the mountains in front.
