Headphones?

What would be a good headphone to use when recording actor or interview audio via my zoom h4n?

Is noise canceling needed?
Anything useful for about $100?
I was looking at some of the headphones here:

Thanks,

Jake,

Check these out...
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/49510-REG/Sony_MDR_7506_MDR_7506_Headphone.html

Here's a bit of the back-story on that Sony line...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony_MDR-V6

I've had the MDR-V6 for many years.... as noted the pleather ear pads tend to break down over the years... but replacements are available that just slip on...

I also own the MDR-7506 .... always had it as a back up set and for a second camera if I needed it..... I've yet to use it on my 7D as I am in the process of getting a recorder.... leaning towards the Tascam DR-100

would probably just need the adapters from TRS down to what the Zoom uses.... I think at least one step down TRS comes with them.... not absolutely sure today as I purchased my 7506 a while back

hope that helps.....

Thanks! that helps a lot.
Looking at the B&H website, the MDR-V6 headphones have a higher user rating, would you go with that or the 7506?

Thanks again,
Jake

I always feel one has to 'qualify' any user reviews..... as in what experience level are the reviewers at ... who write the reviews....

I do factor that in somewhat (for some of my purchases) after I search for the "pro users".... as much as we all can feel that is an accurate description 'by themselves' .... :-)

when I look at the spec I see a slight difference in the frequency response so you have to decide if that matters to you...

If you are using them in somewhat controlled situations then I suspect it is more for a general QC check and for continuity use..... so hey,.... maybe ya go with the V6 and save a couple bucks.... I think they are bit lower in price.

:-)...... decisions decisions.... :-)

Yeah, I guess reviews are pretty subjective.
I think I will go with the 7506

Thanks!

you're welcome Jake !

I'm not sure what the Zoom has for headphone output.... is it 1/8" TRS ?

Be careful of the bleed from 7506's and other headphones that aren't super-tight around the ears, as I had an ADR session and could faintly hear the scratch audio coming from the the headphones during the recording (I should have tested this BEFORE recording, but low budget, no time, etc... ) Luckily the music in the scene masked this tiny error. Just make sure the volume on the headphones isn't loud enough to make it to the microphone during recording! Regardless, I love the 7506's, and I find them to have a rather accurate freq response.

The zoom has the 1/8" jack. This will work fine.

Good info Mike. Thanks.

This is what we use at my day job for video work/production:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/240764-REG/Sennheiser_HD_280PRO_HD_280_Pro.html

Very good range and no one can hear what you're hearing. Plus they completely cover the ears so, to me, they are more comfortable.

Thanks for the help. I ordered the 7506 Friday. Can't wait to start using it.
