PNG on lower thirds

Hello, new to everything. I need help, I downloaded a lower third that had three samples on the video. Here is the link, http://www.pond5.com/stock-footage/349076/three-abstract-lower-thirds.html
Now I need to know how to only use one of the lower thirds and how to make the background transparent so I can put it over a video footage. Thanks

What is your editing software? Basically you apply a mask on a layer. Regarding transparency: it looks like the clip already has an alpha channel so you no longer need to make another one.

If you are using final cut pro, once you put the lower third clip into the timeline, double click on it to open it in the view window. On top of the viewer window, go to the tab named 'motion'. Under the motion tab you can use the cropping tool to isolate only the lower third you want, and you can use the basic motion tool to position it correctly in frame.

if you are using different software, there still should be a cropping tool to let you do the same thing.

Thanks for answering guys. Im new to video editing. The software that Im using is Cyberlink powerdirector. Its a very easy to use program but its very limited. I also have vegas 9 but Im still experimenting with it and dont know too much of it. I dont know how to make a mask or how to modify the alpha channels. Bryanbush, thanks for replying as well. When I drop the lower third on my timeline, the background is completely black. Thanks for all the help guys.

OK, I figured it out on powerdirector. It was under the modify tab and its called effects mask. But the only option that I have are rectangles and squares. What if I have something like this lower third

where the background is uneven, how would I apply a mask there>?

For the last clip: the transparency is provided as the second half of the clip in black and white.
Put your clip on two different tracks(that is you have two copies of the same clip on different tracks). For one of them set In at the beginning of clip and Out point where the proper clip ends(that is half length of the whole clip. For the other one set the In at the half of the original clip(that is first frame of alpha) and the Out point at the end of original clip. Then, use the second clip as a track matte for the first one(I do not know the exact steps for your editing suite but search the help or the net for how to add a track matte).

In other words: the first half of the clip is the proper clip and the second one is the alpha matte. You split the downloaded clip in two and use the second half of it as a track matte for the first half.

You would probably be better off using Vegas as it allows pre-keyed (alpha) clips to be used without a matte and you can quickly mask and move the frame so that the correct portion of the vids sits where you want it to The limitation of the product you are using will most likely not allow you to get the necessary effect you are looking for. You need to be able to "pan and crop" as well as "mask" and set the clip to transparent. Vegas does this nicely.

I have no experience with Cyberlink powerdirector, but basically I designed my non alpha lower thirds with the idea that the editor could just crop, use a mask, an alpha matte, or a luma matte, to separate what they need from what they don't.

The reason for doing it that way is it saves a ton of size without the Alpha, and since it's not a complex alpha it does not matter.
