Free Ideas

It really annoys me that some people seem to be copying other artists on here. I come up with a lot of ideas for stock, more than I can make, and I know there is demand for them, and yet nobody seems to have them... so here are som free ideas :)

Many cameras have an "overcrank" function that allows you to record in slow motion. Record glass breaking, fruit falling with water, carrots, silverware falling, base ball and glove falling anything....Nobody seems to be doing this....Also here is a trick they use in movies. If you get a miniture model car and you blow it up in slow motion it looks like a full sized car... Because the slow motion makes it look like the parts are flying through a further distance.

There are a lot of direct to DVD videos on home improvement. SO anything hardware related. Nails going in wood, buzz saw cutting wood. Also you can make lots of computer generations (nails falling, buckets of paint) just go to the hardware store for ideas.

Every company in america seems to have there own "sexual harrassment" employee training video. I know a videography who has made like 5 sexual harrassment videos, he makes them all the time. So you could do a simple video of some guy putting his hand on a womans shoulder and then her frowning. Nothing real risque, but useful. There are like 50 different clips you could make similar to this.

There is a big market for the "fast and the furious" crowd. The same people who like import tuner, or underground street racing. There are a lot of direct to DVDs of this kind of thing. So videos of car mechanics, custom cars, or nitrous whatever....

In every city there are a lot of local commercials for lawyers. So, something like a judge, the "blind justice statue," a weighing scale, or a car wreck you see on the street. etc etc

So, you're saying I should stop production of my version of saving a water heater?

I wish I had the know how to do some of the things you have.

WOW, I guess no more hairy legs in a shower either ;). For me I have looked at very few other artists videos. But, with 60,000 clips there are going to be lots of similars even from different artists. Now it just comes down to quality, lighting, etc etc. Some great ideas above, wonder how many new ones will be submitted using these suggestion?

I know some clips will be similar by coincidence, but seriously some artists will try to make the same clip (on a very specific shot), and they do it over and over again. I thought I was being paranoid, but other people I know have agreed with me when I show them the clips....Besides I think a lot of people on here mayb e at a loss of ideas anyway... I hope these ideas help everyone.

I have to agree with ironstrike on some of this. One thing that particularly catches my eye is when soemone take a software product such a particle illusion and uses the default particles, render a vid and claim it be their own. I have seen companies do this and literally rip people off by doing so.

I see lots of this type of stuff here as well. That is not being creative nor is it following the software licensing agreement from the various sfx software vendors.

What I haven't seen and I am working on such stuff now is useful background with chroma windows for use in "talking heads" type of format. I am hopefully going to offer a bunch of these in side by side (2 heads), 3 heads and 4 heads... with variations and motion on the frames as well as the background. Typical on news broadcasts with remote links.

But I wonder if this will qualify as stock footage? I think it would, but if someone wants to chime in, please do so. Of course these would be used for post production type of work. I am not sure if "switching" can handle pregenerated backdrops with windos like this.

Vader, do you do a lot of green screen videos? I need some help with them... If anyone knows about green screen, please pm me :-).

I think a lot of news stations in the U.S. usually use there own graphics department...But, remember there are college "news stations" all over the country, not to mention all of the news stations in foreign countries that don't have graphics departments... So I think there is a demand for the talking heads graphic, the question is whether or not p5 is marketing to that demand.

Scott, in AE go into keying, click color key and use the dropper tool to select the color you want to key out.

Also usually copycats aren't that creative to begin with, and the clips are usually not that great. so Im not really that worried about competition. Lately my strategy is to work a really long time on one computer generation, and I intend to charge a lot for it.

If there is one thing I have learned, it's all about quality. If your clip is of a higher quality than a similar clip, then you have very little to worry about. P5 is not a discount footage site, so from what I've seen most buyers go for the best quality, not the lowest price.

Also, remember that not everyone has access to the same tools. So what may be a simple preset in an expensive plugin or tool for you is still something someone else can use. Look at the number 1 (well, now number 2) best selling clip on P5. It was created using the tutorial downloaded from the plugin site with almost no modifications. But many people can't afford that plugin, so the resulting clip is selling extremely well.

Seriously... If you are worried about footage that is similar to your own, then the issue isn't with that footage, it's with you. Either your worried that the other footage is better (and if it is, then you should have done a better job yourself), or your doing enough to keep your clips and portfolio in front of buyers. Which usually means spending more time creating more clips and uploading them and less time watching what other people are doing.

Ironstrike, you've got some great stuff of high quality. I wouldn't worry if I were you, I'd just keep on doing what you're doing and you'll continue to do extremely well.
