V2 far from ready for prime time

I recently discovered that older releases are missing in my option pull downs for "Attaching Releases". SO I went way back to the oldest version, still missing. Then figured maybe in the newest V2 there was something new... and there was - a filter box - so I entered the person's name - came back with zero (0) results and no releases at all.

But there is way more to this story... on the new V2 back-end in regards to tagging etc... it is slow as molasses. As a matter of fact, depending on which bin you may have loaded at the bottom, and how many clips you select to process in the back-end lists of untagged, pending etc... it is super slow and totally non-usable. For some reason, and I don't get it, many companies seem to feel that the trend is "Let's load as much crap as we can on any given page." "Let's not give the user a choice either." This is totally useless. I run at between 20 and 30 MB/s bandwidth and it is still slow as molasses. I pity the customer that may be on DSL or even slower. If I were seeking stock footage at those type of speeds and still saw molasses coming at me, I simply would go out and seek a different provider of such footage.

Bottom line: This is a great way to have clients leave due simply to the lack of speed and download times. Whatever happened to KISS - Keep it Simple Stupid????? - ALl this fancy-schamcy visual crap does not serve any purpose and really should be thoroughly re-thought out. Dump all the layers, scripts, loaders, preview of uselessness and get back to basics.

Microsoft has pulled the same crap with their office suite... add a bunch of stuff no one will ever use and hence make everything fat just so they can sell an upgrade. Intuit - the same. Now P5?????

The question really is: Is it more important to have all this fluff and puff or is it more important to display results quickly and with high quality? P5 in the new version does show better quality in previews, but that's where it ends.. with one exception - no more checkerboard for alpha channel.. that is not so good...

From what I see on this end and also have heard firsthand from an actual buyer that looked at the new version.. well to put it politely... the question posed was "Why are they doing this <expletive>?" "It would be better if they simply focused and spent time on cleaning up the <expletive> search results."

With all due respect, that is a customer speaking.. perhaps it's time to start listening?

All that was really needed a year ago was a new front page for a little new pizzaz. On the artist side all was needed was the ability to attach releases while keywording instead of having to go to a different page and a built in spell check like SS has had for a long time. It's hard to understand how an upgrade that was announced almost a year ago is still not active. I believe every valid stock agency has had probably two upgrades or fresh face since V2 started.

I'm sticking with the old version, just do not personally see an advantage on the new version. Agree with Andy, simple and attractive and upgrade the graphics and front pages every few months.

I Really like P5 and I'm very loyal ... just need some fresh pages and spam elimination.

This new version of the forums sucks!!!!! I have the latest and greatest I7 with tons of memory etc... - 30mb download and this forum runs about as fast as a turtle in heat. Give us the damn option to turn off the crap at the footer (pop-up) if you are going to do this. It doesn't work anyway... have you ever tried to change the "Collections" item pull down in a reasonable time? And whose bright idea was it to change the name "Bin" to "Collection"? It seems that the latest modus operandi is to confuse the hell out of everyone! Of course this is like talking to a turtle as I expect a response of any kind in about a year or so, provided it doesn't get run over while crossing that street called Internet Ave. P5 - you are losing it and that is soooooooo sad.. sorry to say. Oh and if you blame it on the Chrome browser.. than hang it up. You have no idea how many use Chrome out there and that are not or no longer on Apple.. I really hate seeing a company go down this path only to make things "pretty" at the cost of speed and functionality.

New version is now up and running :( How can i get the old version back?

Vader, the problem with load time in your case seems to be because you have thousands of items in your collection. We're working on a fix for this now, but in the meantime creating a new collection with 0 items in it and selecting it from the dropdown should speed things up considerably. Beyond that, your point is well taken - we're prioritizing speed issues, and recognize that there is a lot of fat to cut from, for instance, the home page.

That said, from our surveys the response has been pretty clear -- with the exception of a small (<10%) minority, users definitely prefer the new version.

Wheijnen - you should be seeing a "go back to v1" option up top, to return to the old version. Let me know if you're not seeing it.

Cheers
Tom

Alright then. I shall try this (actually thought about doing that as well but didn't want to have a blank bi out there) -
vadervideo 20 Jan 2013 19:18
Yup - that worked.. but this could be detrimental to a buyer that doesn't realize they were looking at a "fat" bin and then comes back. I know this is not an easy problem to solve across the board, but maybe just limit the amount of loads (number of previews/thumbnails) until a user pro-actively asks for more on any given instance?
shedli 20 Jan 2013 19:21
Yep, that's exactly the fix we're working on now. Thanks for the heads up on this - might have missed it otherwise!

Glad to see you are alive! ;) I really was starting to get worried that no one was listening anymore. Kudos on putting the "Artist Resources" back... now only one more thing, but this may be beyond your control due to limitations on the preview playback engine.. checkerboards for alpha channel. Any chance this will work again or does the new delivery engine no longer offer that functionality?

Thanks, still prefer the old version because of its speed.
The number of downloads in the artist page is a bit misleading. Shouldn't this be the number of clips the contributor has sold instead of the number of clips he has downloaded?
