Microphone for Canon 60D?

Charlinex 30 Jun 2013 19:45
Hi, could anyone please recommend a good quality and moderately priced microphone for Canon 60D?

The mic with the camera seems to have too much static noise. Any suggestions to reduce the unwanted noise?

Thanks!

I use a Rode NTG-3 and the sound is amazing.

Thanks, Michael! Wow, that's $700 before duty, taxes and shipping.

Is there some smaller and cheaper? :)

I use this one on Canon 5d Mk3. It´s ok for ambient sound recording of my use!

PerJohan, thanks for the link. The price is alright, although I'd like it to be smaller. I mainly want it for outdoor landscape clips, such as bird chirping, beach waves, wind in forest. Does it work that way? Sorry if my questions are not that smart, because I am truly a newbie.

Hi Charlinex - the Rode VideoMic is wonderful it will serve your needs beautifully for what you described, and when you don't want the wind noise - the Dead Cat suppresses it perfectly.

I also use it to record 18-21 Piece Big Bands (indoors and out), and it out performs everything else I've tried for the same money.

Thanks, AcmeStudios, sounds good. What are the differences, other than the slightly different price, between the one posted by PerJohn and AcemStodio?

I have a Rode VideoMic. Keep the rubber bands lubricated. They tend to make a squeaky sound.

Lux, thank you so much for the information!

It's interesting that I have noticed most people do not include audio in their footage. Is it true?

As far as I know:

1- Video buyer search for best clip. They give little value to sound.
2- Even if you use an external mic the audio recorded in the camera is not of professional quality. You would need a professional exterior recording device like the ZOOM H6 or Beachtek pre-amp. I use my zoom mic only for interviews on a tripod. I do not think it is strong enough to run with it for news or sport coverage.
3- Sound may be important in news related clips. Example: item838706
4- Some members upload the sound in a separate file. They place a link so the buyer can buy the audio if interested.

I leave audio on clip only if I think that it will help make a sale. Example: https://www.pond5.com/stock-footage/3282406

If I buy a new carry along camera mic it would be this one: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/744768-REG/Rode_VIDEOMIC_PRO_VideoMic_Pro_Compact_Shotgun.html
