What´s your upload speed?

Hi everyone,

In an attempt to figure out if I am in fact "handicapped" regarding my upload speed, or just lazy and using is as a pretext to not shoot HD(V), I wanted to start a little survey to see how you are doing in this respect.

Mine is 256 kbps. Surely good enough for SD, but for HD/mjpeg I´d personally consider it to be a nightmare. I am paying 40$ per month for this in Argentina. If I wanted an upgrade to 512 kbps I´d have to invest 100$, for 1024 kbps 200$.

So, how are you getting these high numbers of huge files up here?

Thanks!
Stefan

PS: My downstream is much faster, 3000 kbps, but that is of course more helpful for Youtube but less for P5 :)...

Because of my distance from the local exchange, British Telecom can only supply me with a 512kb (kilobit) line.

Filezilla reports that I get about 30KB (KiloBytes) per second. In round numbers I reckon I can upload about 100MB per hour on the line. I queue up three of four HD files - depending on the sizes - before I go to bed and they are normally still uploading when I get up.

The problem with FTP is that it will grab as much bandwidth as is available, so other internet applications like web browsing don't get a look in. Uploading during the day and evening isn't worth it, as I have to throttle back Filezilla to upload at a much reduced rate, and the dent it makes in the total transmission queue is minimal.

I have 200+ HD clips which I have written to DVD-ROMs and mailed to P5. I'm now waiting for them to start appearing on the site so that I can tag them. Maybe that's an option for you - granted it will take some time to get clips online, but it might be less painful that spending 8 hours uploading every HD clip.

55kb a second...

I usually just upload over night. It keeps my internet speed fast during the day so I don't anger the g/f.

Thanks Paul and Scott!

Scott, that is 55 KByte/s, right? Otherwise you´d be the world record holder of patience :)...

Paul, I know what you mean. During FTP, Web browsing reminds me of the good old times with the dial up modem, especially with WS FTP Pro that really squeezes out all available bits. I have however experienced that reducing the upload by only 10%, eg from 31 to 28 KB/s in my case, things are almost going back to normal. I do that with FileZilla on my webserver because WS doesn´t have that option. I am not using FileZilla for stock since I got some problems with it at "anoSSer" site. Maybe I should try it here during the day. P5 works always better!

Are you sure about your connection? Seems you getting only half out of it.

DVD is definitely the way to go once you have many clips. Glad P5 accepts them without problems. But I have to go on a trip to shoot that much. I need that "now or never" push to get fully into gear, but once I do I can´t stop anymore.

Cheers,
Stefan

Ah, well, "512kb" is the product name, but I get 486kb/s download pretty consistently. As upload speeds are never the same on an ADSL service (hence the name, Asynchronous), I get about 235kb/s upload. I've used the www.internetfrog.com/speedtest web page to get these figures.

I think the following method is right, though anyone who knows better please correct me: dividing my 235kb/s by 8 (bits per byte) gives 29.375, which allowing for minute to minute speed variations is pretty close to my 30 to 31KB/s upload rate.

To get equal upload and download sppeds I would need a SDSL line - Synchronous DSL - which is massively expensive in the UK.

Cable is not an option where I live.

Currently I am upping at school *university* at 100k per open connection. I have 3 connections going at once.... very nice speeds.

I got you wrong then, Paul. I thought 512 kbps was just your upload. Your calculation is correct. kbps/8 = KB/s.

3x100, wow! I´d like to go back to university were we had that at a place I worked. But they probably wouldn´t have paid me for uploading stock, at least not for tagging during working hours :).

Currently I can upload about 10GB per day. You do the math. ;-)

1024 kbps max. Life is not fair :(...

How much is that in go ol Germany?
varius 11 Nov 2008 21:33
Depends... €40,- including three phone lines, phone flatrate and some other extras that I would not need.
