Not going wireless with a lavalier mic

Is it possible to use a lavalier microphone with a long cord running to the camera? Or will you get intereferance and other sorts of issues. I am going to do a lawyer shoot, which will be the guy talking about his lawfirm sitting at a desk, and then some shots of outside, etc. Anyway, I was thinking for the shots of him sitting at the desk for sound I would use the lavalier mic, but didn't want to buy a whole wireless system if I could get by with a corded mic, since there won't be a lot of walking around. I've also thought about doing it with a shotgun mic mounted to a boom pole. Give me some ideas friends.

Definitely use the lav with a long cord. I actually did some time as a videographer for a company that did video depositions, so that's pretty much what I did all day was shoot lawyers (no pun intended). Using a wired lav was by far the best way to get good audio. Cheers.

Any recommends on the lavalier choice, and also what type of cable to buy. I don't have XLR on my fx1000, so mini jack is the way I'll be going. They don't need to be powered over like 10 feet do they?

I always used Sony ECM?? (where the ?? represents a number--they have different models, higher numbers being better quality & more $$). Of course the equipment wasn't mine, so I used what I was given. But the sound quality was great for voices. B& H has a good intro to lavs here:

I don't know much about powering mics with mini jacks. The Sony mics used a AA battery in a sleeve about 8 feet from the mic. The end of the sleeve was a male XLR connector, which connected to a standard XLR cord. You could consider getting a cheap mixer with XLR inputs, then output from the mixer to the camera. That might come in handy someday when you want to record more than one person talking.

Great. Anyone have recommendations for a mixer? I have seen on that attaches to the bottom of the camera, and has 2 xlr ports. Can't find it on bhphoto though.. might be searching for the wrong thing.

You might want to get something that doesn't attach to the camera...it will probably be less versatile in the long run. Google "portable audio mixer" and you should have plenty to look at. You can spend a ton, or just go to Radio Shack...

dapoota, you are thinking of a Beachtek adapter that sits under the camcorder and gives a 3.5mm jack equiped camcorder the abilitiy to accept XLR inputs.

THeres also a company calledhttp://www.juicedlink.com/ that also make adapters, supposely they work pretty well

I was looking at those Sony ECM lavalier mics, and they were kinda pricy :-). I am looking for a lavalier that I could hook into a transmitter, if I decide to go wireless later.

That Juiced site has some great video tutorials on getting the best audio.
