lego follow focus

lol look what I made with legos:

I glued one 'Brick' to the side of an EF lense, it makes it a little hard to release because the button is right there, but its not impossible.Actually I replaced the rubber band with a rubber tread thing... I replaced it because it was making the focus jerky. It needs something with a lot of friction but not stretchy.

It works now.

Its not flimsy either, I could always superglue all the bricks together if it was.Looks like I saved $500 Ha!
Eat it Redrock.....

Now that is creative! kudos there Ironstrike, maybe you should market it and sell it on the internet.

That is cool. I agree, very creative.

My follow focus came in the mail today but the company asked for a signature and I wasn't home, so I have to go to the post office to pick it up.
I hate those signature things. Almost as much as clowns.

I put a motorized gearbox and wheels on my table top dolly. Works great, I bought the parts to make a motor speed controler, so I can make it go really slow if I want.
I guess I can put some of that electronics background to use with my photography.

Ha ha ha Fantastic!

lol thanks! BTW I improved on it since I took that pic, I also put a lego man on top of it as a joke. The problem with selling it, is the rubber tread I used was from an old toy part at goodwill, Its not like I can go to lowes and get a bunch of those, although maybe lowes has something similar.

Jake the dolly thing is still on my to do list.

What kind of turn ratio do you want for a follow focus?
ironstrike 4 Mar 2009 19:35
I can change the turn ratio by changing the handle gear, not sure what the exact number is. BTW here is the latest update:

I need to put electric tape around the tread to reinforce it, but it works without any problems or jerkyness.

While not as sophisticated or cool as yours I just picked up mine from the post office.

The ratio from the large gears that go around the lens to the turning knob is 3 to 1

set it up and get some video up Jake! I want to see how well it works.... this is something I've pondered purchasing.

Also, on your lego one Mark, why are the pictures so out of focus? Hard to tell how it works.
JHDT_Productions 5 Mar 2009 17:28
Because he's taking the photographs with his lego camera.

It may be a few weeks before I can shoot something with it. I'm packing everything for the move.
