For someone who wants to start a website, is there a particularly good webhosting service for videographers photographers or film people? I mean sometimes different webhosting sites are suited for different needs...

Any suggestions? What do you all use? Godaddy?

NO referal links!!! If you put a refferal link up you lose all credibility. Im not stupid. If I wanted that I would just search "webhosting services" on google.

I have the business plan for about $90 a year. it gives me 3 domain names if I want and unlimited storage.
They only host so its up to you to design the web page.

There are some that are more geared towards photography, with automated galleries etc.. Pictage comes to mind... but they do charge for facilities. Being a hosting company, I have always found it difficult to offer specific tools for specific industries as there is always something missing... one just can't make everything for everyone available as they want it. Hence, I would look for a hosting company that offers the basic facilities such as PHP, CGI access etc.. then find the tools you need and install them or have them installed. I don't know of any specific host that specifically deals with film people or videographers. - For photography - there are lots. But in today's day and age, it's getting really easy to do galleries. For example Lightroom (Adobe) has such a feature already built in. Many hosts will surcharge if you start putting up a lot of vids due to the bandwidth and disk space usage.

Microsoft give web hosting for free with no gimmicks. check it out at Office Live. I've been using them for a couple years. No cost, email and all the web page stats as far as visits and views.

Interesting about microsoft, still I don't know about trusting them.
I heard with some of those free hosting sites that if your website becomes popular they "take control" of it (steal it) from you.

I guess all I need is a basic setup, there are plenty of html templates. I was thinking maybe there was a hosting service that provided some other benefit relating to video or film networking. I can't think of anything specific, but maybe something I wasn't aware of. I could always use vimeo for streaming video, I mean it looks pretty good and it would relieve my own bandwidth.

I like those plans Jake, I might get the basic one, I still I need to design the html itself before I get hosting anyway. So ill investigate the microsoft thing.

bluehost is the best i've used by far. i used to be with ixwebhosting but found my sites got hacked a fair bit. i believe they might have done something about that now but didnt your site get hacked recently jake?

We sometimes send psd:s to http://markup4u.com and receive perfect 100% validated html + CSS. It saves us time and it increases the quality (you can't be good at everything). These guys have been very responsive and even answered questions they didn't "have to" way after the pages were delivered.

Having clean html/css also helps further on when you want to move on with the site, like using a database backend and have dynamic content etc.

P5 naturally rents full (non shared) servers, which probably is a too steep cost and too much work in the beginning, but nevertheless we can only give our very best recommendations to http://rimuhosting.com/. These guys are brilliant to have in the boat when it storms. They also offer virtual servers at a cheaper price than a full dedicated one (but you still need to manage the http stack of course).

Yep, my site was hacked, as was many others it seems :-(
But I've been with them for over 3 years and that was the first time I have that kind of trouble. And the down time has been very minimal.
So all in all I really can't complain.

I wonder if there is a way for P5 to supply web hosting to artists. Since they buy such a large "space" maybe they could buy a little more and make it available to us for a much reduced cost????

Don't see how it would benefit them, unless the site was for portfolios and promotion only and not an e-commerce site which competes with them.

What I'd really like to see is P5 create a much richer environment for artists to host demo reels and better portfolios here.

Also, one of the few reasons I still occasionally visit Artbeats is because they have some great tutorials available for compositing and such. I'd love to see P5 allow artists to submit tutorials and host them here.
