Canon T1i

Anyone got opinions on the video quality of the Canon Rebel T1i?

1080p at only 20fps. Can 720p be up sized without a big quality loss?

What other Cameras have good HD video?

Thanks,

I've read a dozen reviews on it and 20 fps is pretty pitiful. You can't move the camera at all and if the subject you are filming has any medium/fast movement then the video looks really bad.

There is software that can do a pretty good job upsizing 720p to 10080p, but it depends entirely on the clip as to how good it does. Honestly, for me... I'd just shoot at 720p and not upsize it.

The Nikon D5000 does really well in reviews at 720p 24fps, as does the D90. The Panasonic GH1 is highly regarded. It does 1080p 24fps, 1080i at 60 fps and 720p at 60 fps.

I wouldn't try the Rebel. But like dave said the D5000 and the GH1 are good choices.
I'm thinking about either of those as a second camera to my Canon D5
Which would be the best choice if that is in the budget.

I wouldn't upsize the video for stock. If you shoot at 720 submit that.
In the end you want to submit the best you can to the buyers and upsizing that much has to leave artifacts.
Also 20fps is worthless, I don't know why they even took the time to put that on the camera.

Thanks for the info,

My Budget is around $1000. The Canon VIXIA HV40 HDV is also appealing.
Also the Canon SX1 IS with full 1080p/30fps.

But here is my thinking on the T1i.

It is the best dSLR in its price range as far as still photos are concerned..

Its 720p video is decent. 1080p quality is OK, but the 20FPS issues is the problem.

I'm focussing on Timelapse and scenic shots where there is little to none panning/zooming.

I'm intrigued by the idea of shooting at 1080p/20fps and outputting at 120-200 FPS. (sorry.... output at 30fps.......buy Timewarping using AE.....making 5 minutes of video into a 30 second timelapse)

The clincher is the array of possible options in a dSLR camera system with varrying lenses. Macro lense dSLR Video....? Possibilites....

My short list so far includes:

Canon DR-T1i
Canon VIXIA HV40 HDV (camcorder)
Canon SX1 IS

Well, if you're looking at the photo side to do time-lapse maybe the T1i is the way to go. Also in the budget.

Yes, the DSLR video has really opened the doors to using all the cool lenses.

The other thing to consider is a DSLR is a still camera first with video added on. It's not as easy to shoot video with the dslr as a true video camera.
Fast moving objects and focusing is an issue. Forget auto focus as it doesn't work on the Canon or Nikon cameras in video mode.

Not an issue for most stock clips as I never use auto anything, just ruins the shot.
But with its limitations the final product is fantastic.

I would be careful of doing time-lapse in software. Maybe research that on different sites.
I know some won't accept software time-lapse.
They only want in camera over or under crank.

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH1.... seems to have it all.

Hows the market fot 1080p/24fps?
JHDT_Productions 21 Jul 2009 14:34
There is a guy here (spotmatic) that shoots 24p. He seems to be a top seller so I guess there is a big call for it.

If you are shooting for the television or video, 30p is the way to go. If you are shooting for independent film makers or movies, 24p is the way to go. However, hollywood video companies have no issues converting 30p to 24p for the right clip. They have the equipment and knowledge.

Personally, I think overall, the NTSC/PAL market is larger here than the 24p market is. But they both exist.

Right now you purchase an HV 40 for $819.75 and the HV 30 for $899.99 from www.bhphotovideo.com. And here's a clip blue heron in slow motion of less than 25% of it original speed taken with PD170 without overcranking the camerahttps://www.pond5.com/stock-footage/119326

And the the Panasonic Lumix GH1 is the winner.
