Hi birkley,
DV is always lower field first ( google DV upper field or lower field ) and you will find lots of explanations.
Regarding the mov DV codec. In order to view high quality video on Quicktime player, you need to change your quicktime player as below. Try it.
Open you movie file.
Go to Edit - Preferences - Player Preferences - check on ( select ) Use high quality video setting when available - Click Apply. Reopen the file. You will see the difference.
However some players will show just a quarter of the file on the screen with combing effects indicated interlaced video. Not to worry, the actual files are pretty clear and sharp and usable. Hope this helps.

Hi ngothyeaun, thanks for the reply. The trouble was that my quicktime player wasn't working. The reason I was concerned was because I was putting the original avi and the converted mov on the Vegas timeline and previewing them.
The Vegas 8 converted clip definitely looks soft when viewed that way but not the Vegas 7 version.
I took your advise that the clips were fine and updated the quicktime player so that it now works. Ran a clip from both versions of Vegas in the Quicktime player and they do indeed both look sharp with no discernible difference in quality. I'm happy now that the uploaded clips are perfectly fine :-) Thanks.
