you should consider if you want to make a living from this type of musical activity, or you're not doing it for profit.
say you want 1000eur a month from stock music.
consider most sites take 50% of your earnings (a total ripoff imo).
that means you actually have to make 2000eur per month.
say you have 100 audio clips.
say the price that usually sells is 25eur.
that means you have to sell 80 clips monthly.
that's almost 3 per day.
you would better post on 20 different sites and hope that each sells at least 4 of your clips a month.
so getting 2 sales in a month is not impressive, bosone.

i didnt consider some clips may not sell at a price higher then 15eur, and i didnt consider the taxes you'd have to pay for what you earn on stock music.

actually, i think it is absurd selling on music stocks.
think about it, for a audio clip you spend at least 5 hours (at least !!!) developing it.
you might spend another 1-2 extra hours mixing/mastering it.
not to mention the cost of the softwares and plugin you're using.
so you spend a day (8hrs) on one track.
now, if you'd be working on a job, that day would worth 100eur (if you have 2000eur per month at your local job).
so your idea should return at least 100eur to you.
if you sell it at the regular price, 25 eur, you'll get only 12 eur from one sale.
so you have to have 8 sales of the same track only to cover the expenses !!!
after those 8 sales you can consider it to be profitable.
and having 8 sales on one track is rarrissimo on most users on stock music sites.
:(
so you see, you're better off making a site and promoting them yourself, and negociating other prices with the potential buyers.

dear LivingroomClassics all you said is right and i absolutely quote it.
i'm not at all impressed by my stock music sales. actually i'm impressed to had just 2 sales here after three weeks!!!
i'm also on other sites - where i sold something more - but still i made very very few money since the beginning of my "royalty free" experience.
but the matter for me is that:
1) music is my hobby
2) I am putting on these sites music that i have already made for my own amusement. On my HDD i have more that 100 songs of different genres, made in the last 12 years, for nothing but the joy of making music. I have recently discovered the possibility to put this music on stock website and i'm actually make some money from it, with very little effort (actually uploading, tagging and categorizing the tracks is SOOO tedious!!).
i'm not doing a lot of promotion, and i'm not spending a lot of time on it.
obvoiusly, i hope to sell more and to make more money, but for me it's not a matter of living "with" music or to sell 1.000 tracks/year... even some 100$ more on 1 year is good for me...
also, for me it would be impossible to contact potential buyers and to compose tracks on demand, because music is not my businness and i not have a lot of time for it.
But do you know what is the greatest part of all of this?? is that i made music because i felt the "necessity" to make music and to play / record my musical ideas. now someone is buying this music (on this and on other stock sites). That means that my music was not bad all all, isn't it? and this feeling makes me very happy! :)

well. i belive people buy your music cuz they happened to stumble on it while they were searching, not that they compared your music with everyone else's and decided your's is better. also, they bought it cuz it's cheap.
stock music sites have cheap prices.
what i said right now is not strictly related to you, but to anybody that posts audio clips in here, including me.
what we all forget is that it's about the business side of the music-business.
it is about the business.
hard to grasp aspect.
i didnt yet.

I am also a hobbyist at this time. I've had maybe a dozen sales to this point (on site since early Nov. 2012). I chose P5 over other sites like audiojungle because P5 is non-exclusive. When I'm ready and have enough of a portfolio and pipeline built I can put together my own site and market my royalty-free tracks directly. However, you have to be able to host the portfolio, support your own custom watermarks and be able to do e-commerce for digital downloads, etc. Until I can put all of that together, P5 gives me a place to start that doesn't tie me to an exclusive arrangement. Of course, this is just MHO. Your story and results may vary.

why do u need e-cormmerce? wownt u just be posting your portfolio and then if someone likes it compose separately for them (not posting the result on your site yet) and bargain with the price face to face?

Hi LC, that's something I had not considered in a while. My presumption has been that, except for larger budget situations, producers mainly buy stock these days. I would certainly relish the opportunity to compose for specific applications. I'll give that some thought. Thanks for the input.
