Do you think buyers know...

Storage is so cheep though, I mean I'm not sure what tapes cost if your backing up to tape, but removable hard drives you can get a 500 gig for a little over $100.00. I guess still that could be an expensive option if your doing tons and tons of projects.

Are many people here selling allot of smaller then HD clips? It seems like most of the people I talk to all the time shoot HD, so I don't really know what the market is for SD on P5.

just going by the stats on the resource page, Between 50 and 65% of sales are HD. HD is the future, starting next month TV is going HD in North America and therefore gaming will need to go HD to work on TV's so there's a large chunk of the market that will require HD more then they do now.
ODesigns 13 Dec 2008 17:22
That's a misconception. TV isn't going HD, but DIGITAL (which includes HD). Stations can still broadcast SD, but it has to be sent on a DIGITAL signal.

HD is growing, but SD is still going to be with us for awhile. It isn't going away on Feb 17th.
Frenchtoast 13 Dec 2008 17:31
my mistake, channels here (Toronto) are broadcasting that they will be going HD and to go and get the digital box, just assumed, and you know what happens when you assume.
varius 13 Dec 2008 19:24
Well, that's what they want you to assume - so you go and buy a new TV set along with the digital box. ;-)

So a little less then half the sales are not HD that almost makes it worth it if it was not so time consuming.

Its pretty easy to downconvert and crop HD footage in AE. I think buyers will know how to do it.

You know I hear a lot of people talk about stock footage in terms of North America and Europe.

A lot of emerging nations are developing TV stations, I was in Costa Rica a long time ago and they had several TV stations with locally developed shows etc. When I was in Morocco recently they had 2 'Maroc' TV stations with Moroccan actors on Moroccan soaps. Think about that.... These little countries are making their own TV... And not to mention http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bollywood which produces more content than Hollywood (it may not be as good, but it does) .... So no, the recession doesn't matter, and SD clips will be useful for a lonnnnng time. There is SO much money to be made in the media, yes there are a lot of people trying to get into media, but most don't know what they are doing so in my opinion there is very little competition compared to the opprotunity that exists. I know directors who produces really cheap movies in SD and they make a lot of money distributing overseas.

A good experiment would be to upload HD and SD clips and price them exactly the same. That might give some good info.
RekindlePhoto 14 Dec 2008 03:50
That would be a great experiment. Both clips would have to be linked so buyers found both of them and then had to chose which to buy.
ODesigns 14 Dec 2008 13:35
That is a good idea. The trick is making sure the buyer KNOWS they are both available.

I've only had 2 sales on P5 so far; one an HD and the other an SD. The HD sale had no SD alternative, but the SD sale had an HD version.

On other sites where I've had more sales, all but one were SD sales, and all SD sales had HD alternatives. And on that other site, the buyer can clearly see that there are alternative versions available.

That alone makes me think either 1) buyers don't know they'd be better off buying HD, or 2) buyers are cheap.
