4K downsize to HD

Make it automated, on-demand when requested by the customer upon purchase. No need to downsize ALL existing clips. That's what RS does.

Whatever it takes to make all 4K clips quickly and readily available for search as well as purchase. Many buyers are impatient and will not want to wait any measurable length of time for it to render or convert. If it's near real time then great, if it takes 5-10 minutes, time is valuable and buyers should not have to wait in front of a computer hoping the conversion works correctly waiting for it to start downloading.

Just hope it happens soon, SS and RS are taking sales away from the best agency in the world ... P5.

4K is not a big seller yet compared to HD. 4K footage sitting here with no conversion is wasting space and time and losing sales.

Make it automated on-demand !
Downsize all 4K will be waste of resource and cost, not every clip the best seller or sell at all !

Last I heard was a week or two and it's been another month. Any updates P5. I hate to go back to uploading HD only but uploading 4K is just not a good business decision since a majority of sales are HD and 4K is still in it's infancy. From the P5 stats, HD sales are 68.16% of all sales and 4K is 2.98%. Indeed there are significantly more HD for sale that helps to understand the difference. The more HD that are uploaded waiting for 4K downsizing the more duplication of files that will need to be cleaned up.

We all want the process to work correctly and accurately. We also all want to incrementally improve sales and 4K is a big option to do that. But having a large 4K portfolio and a much smaller opportunity to make sales from them is counter productive for the artists and P5.

A lot of artists have invested in new 4K cameras, upgraded computers, software and internet speed to better handle the 4K process. We also know P5 is spending a great deal of money and manpower to make this happen.

Communication please. This is not an industry first or a industrial secret since SS and RS has been doing it for a long time. Secrecy to get a jump on the competitors is not in play here.

The forums and individual artists contacts has been high on this for a long time. We get excited at the 4K prospects, brief information gets us excited then things go silent for extended time periods. It really doesn't cost anything for P5 to help us better plan for our business to help P5 through communication.

I really have no worries about what P5 is up to regarding this or that. It is a waste of time to even think about as it should not have any impact on planning your business. I simply keep moving forward with whatever tech I feel is feasible and affordable for my needs. I do not buy or spend on the pretense that some organization is planning on doing something in the near or semi-near future. If I did that, I would be broke based on that simple fact that one can not rely on others to consistently perform for one's own needs. So why waste so much time asking questions (or demanding an audience) when there really is no need or benefit for that matter. Things will happen when they happen. This has always been the case with all the agencies and I doubt it will change on the wishes and wants of the few that make it known. 4K is here and it is here to stay. So what's the question again? Will they do auto-re-sizing? I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Won't we? In the mean time, I really don't care when this happens and will simply upload multiple versions when I deem it necessary or worth the time. Otherwise I just upload 4K. And no, sales have not diminished due to less HD uploads. On the contrary, I realize just as much 4K selling as I have HD. If someone needs the shot, they will buy it regardless of it's resolution, size or format.

As one who feels the need to upload both 4k and the HD version, the most annoying part is associating the files a few weeks later (i.e., after they've been approved). My suggestion is for P5 to add "associate" to the list of "actions" in the action drop down window on one's upload page. After uploading, check the two files you want associated and "execute." Might be easier said than done, but you never know.

And regarding auto-resizing, as SS does. I don't know the answer to this, but here is the question: Is there any difference in "quality" of an HD clip that has been created from a 4k clip by SS (and P5 if/when they do) vs. an HD clip I make directly from the original 4k video?

For example -- I export (from Premiere) my clips as pro res files, both for 4k and HD. In a future auto-conversion world, would P5 make an HD pro res file of my 4k pro res? I imagine that is just a re-sizing, so no quality lost.

But what if P5 doesn't make the HD clips in same format as the 4K? Is there additional compression? Would anyone notice?

SS takes my 4K pro res clips and makes an HD QT other than pro res -- not sure what (p-jpeg maybe?).

This is a curiosity question.

We have been told before by P5 that 4K and HD will be ProRes. From everything I've read a HD down sized from a 4K is better quality. Pushes a 420 closer or equivalent to a 422. Now that is using a good program like Premiere Pro or After Effects. Any down conversion quality is always based on the quality and settings used during the down conversion. SS seems to be using a pretty high compression when converting HD.
