NAB STUFF

I don't know anything else about the H1 or the Beholder.
As far as "looking" rugged. The Nebula wins for that. I had that in my hand at NAB and it looks and feels very rugged.
The other two look like a round flashlight holder. But I also want to wait for Dave Dougdale's report.
He did have a good report on the Nebula.

Here is a video with the Beholder and a GH4 at NAB
Looks stable but they all do.

Norm, The customer service is the main reason to buy from the U.S. dealer for the Nebula.

I saw the plugin "Beauty Box" from Digital Anarchy for the first time at NAB and was VERY impressed. I'm definitely going to get that. I already own their "Deflicker" plugin and it's pretty amazing as well.

I went to the big meetup thing on Tuesday night and was also VERY impressed with the audio package for fixing audio. I can't remember the name at the moment (I'm at work, but I'll post it and the link when I get home later).

My biggest disappointment is the lack of M4/3 lenses at 1.8 or shallower. There are some expensive ones out there, but I was hoping for something cheaper and more options in sizes.

None of the new blackmagic cameras were especially impressive. Even the mini. Although, I might change my mind once they actually ship and we start seeing real world footage.

I was in need of upgrading my audio from an old Sennheiser G2 kit, so I took a very close look at the new Rode wireless audio kit. It's nice, it's affordable, but since I do a lot of news stuff, I need an XLR dongle and they don't offer one, nor are they going to any time soon. So, I ended up going with a used G3 kit. If you don't need the XLR dongle, the Rode kit sounded really good (although it's a bit bulkier than the Sennheiser or Sony kits).

If you work in live news, there were a LOT of cheaper HDMI cell modems. The station I work at has an older one that transmits a 1080p signal over 4 cell modems (3G/4G combo). I saw a couple of companies with small transmitters that use up to 8 cell modems (3G/4G combo) that were sub $1000. In fact, I bought one for my station (their money, not mine :) on show special for $799.

I was also impressed with the GoPro 4. I hadn't really looked close at it when it was released, but was impressed enough with it at NAB that I sold my GoPro 3's and am ordering 4's for replacement.

I did finally find a Panasonic engineer that confirmed the model "GH5" will be used on a future camera, but refused to tell me anything about it. Only that the next upgrade from the GH4 is still under development and they are working closely with a lot of big name "users" to finalize the feature set.

And a Canon rep told me they have no plans to put 4k in a DSLR any time soon. if I wanted a camera for film making, I should get the C100 or C300. In otherwords, the want to return the DSLR to the Pro Stills market and the Consumer Video market and get out of the Prosumer market completely.

Gearwise, I was mostly underwhelmed this year. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting a lot of Pond5 artists and peeps from Pond5 itself.

I've been using Beauty box for a couple of years. It does work great.

Interesting the Canon rep said no 4k in a DSLR when they have had the 1DC out for 3 years I think.

When I do get another camera I was looking at the Sony FS7 I love the internal 4k recording since I don't want to use external.

I'll keep using my C300 but it will be put to use as a B cam. I certainly can't sell it since Canon reduced the price so drastically.
And because of that I'm not upgrading to the C300 MKII only for them to reduce the price over $10,000 in 2 years.
I know I'm repeating myself on that one but it really pissed me off and I told the canon rep that at NAB. I'm sure all he heard was blah blah blah....

The audio recording thing was this company.
Yes, I was pretty impressed by it as well.

I prefer 8 bit rugged than 32 bit flimsy.

The 1DC is not a cheap "prosumer" camera though... I think they've abandoned the "lead" in prosumer video, preferring to overcharge filmmakers in the high end market.

I'm also betting that Canon had a serious overstock issue with the C300 which is why they dropped the price... To unload them at cost and prepare for the Mark II.

I'm guessing they're not selling as many as they would have liked.

This wireless lens adapter from Aputure was also very interesting.

Welcome to the Canon EOS House of Obsolete dear traveller.Where everything loses it's value before you even learn which button does what.

Many youtube video of NAB when referring to CANON they only have scornful comments. Many unhappy Canon users.

Yes, Canon gets a lot of negative reviews, particularly for the XC10. A shame, I was considering it as a replacement for my GH4. Although the GH4 is a great camera, its sensor is also a dust magnet. And that's really not what you want to deal with every other day when you're 'on the road'.
