Sony FDR AX100 UHD 4K

I have always had a camcorder starting with the HV30, I have a 5D2 and a Panasonic X920 (still have my TM700) and defiantly find a use for both. The camcorder is a quicker set up, easier to frame a shot with a zoom lens, it's lighter than a DSLR so tripods and stands can be smaller and lighter. I will have my GH4 tomorrow and I'm seriously thinking of getting this Sony as the companion camcorder, then having a big clear out on EBay of all my other equipment. I have the BMPCC and like it but have not used it much, I'm hoping with the GH4 that they share the same lens mount they will work together well.

Miz, great review and first impressions, thank you.

Cheers Normstock, I'm really interested in this DSLR vs Camcorder - so as not to hi-jack this AX100 thread I'll post on a new thread.

Thanks for sharing all your thoughts so far guys, it seems like an interesting camera. Plenty of ability for a 2000 dollar piece of gear.

Here's are a few that I've uploaded but not approved yet. Select the view full frame still and it gives a better idea that the video preview.

The sharpness is real good, like said it would be nice to drop it down some and maybe as I learn the menus I can do that. The full size frames look much better than the previews, I believe that is because P5 after a while goes back and renders the clips in a higher quality. Not too bad IMHO.

This
one is approved so can view the full size still frame. Used default and full auto focus.

Both Gene and Don, thank you for your reports, I look forwards to future updates. At last, I am really tempted to move into producing some entry level 4k Video Clips. Any suggestions on purchasing an NTSC version of the camcorder here in the UK as I think it has commercial advantages, purchasing directly from a retailer will certainly have import duty implications, one of the many disasters of being in the European Community.

The AX100 looks really good! I don't think we can see the full frame until it's approved. You should post a short clip reel in 4K (watermarked, of course) on Youtube.

If you take the time to read, instead of posting, Don has said 37521928 is approved and can be previewed http://www.pond5.com/stock-footage/37521928/chick-buff-orpington-eating-seeds-outdoor-4k-005.html

Sorry.

I'm not winning over any friends today...despite my friendly, smiling avatar.

But what I was curious was the sky shots. I think Don (or someone here) said that the sky in Z100 shots were noisy. Since that church had a sky, but I couldn't see the full frame, I was suggesting the shot be put on YouTube in full resolution.

It would be nice to see a full resolution MOVING shot.

Ya, the moving is where it is going to be noticeable with that codec.

Don go out and shoot some water and a reflection of the blue sky in it! :)
